@royal_peter Did you check the video I linked to? I know it's not quite a tutorial, it's very fast and not at all in-depth, but I think that's all I've got for now. And considering you can also download the character files, that should be enough to replicate the set-up.
I stole this tech for the Open Movie that's premiering today. Thanks for sharing, it worked great!
Our supporters even get a video roughly explaining it:

And the character .blend files will also go online today, right here:

A video we presented at Siggraph in 2015 and the corresponding paper https://t.co/oOK6FcJ1KJ In order to create the blendshape deformations for the Peanuts characters, we were deforming them in 2D UV space and mapping them back in 3D space. Kind of crazy that it worked.
@MrSpocksEars That's not what's happening. The transformations are linear, just not in 3D space, but in UV space. Which, when mapped back into 3D space, results in the geo moving along the character's shape. Which just happens to be curved in this case, but doesn't have to be.
@Wahooney The system supports depth! It's simple, since the flat mesh is already a 3D object, you can deform it along its normal, and then just apply that offset along the normal of the 3D mesh.
That said, I don't think it was super useful on this production, but maybe a little.
@Wahooney There is a UVMap specifically designed for this purpose, yes. Symmetrical around the center, one large island for the area that needs to deform. That UVMap then gets turned into a mesh, deformed, and compared to its original state to extract a delta.
@CosmoMidias I would ask Alexander Gavrilov, the maintainer of Rigify. My code is free for the taking. As for me trying to upstream these sorts of things myself... I don't really have the time/patience unfortunately. (Sorry I replied after 6 months, apparently I don't open Twitter often.)
