Folks, I need everyone in New Mexico to pay attention to this one. New World Screwworm has been confirmed in our state. Right now we have one known case, a dog from Lea County who is being treated at a veterinary clinic in Andrews County, Texas.

A lot of us remember the last time we dealt with screwworm. It was a serious fight, but we got it done. The key factor to that success was that ranchers, farmers, veterinarians, and neighbors all stayed alert and worked together. That is exactly what we need right now.

And please know, this is not just a cattle issue. Screwworm can affect all kinds of livestock, wildlife, and yes, your dogs and cats too. If you notice any animal with an unusual wound or acting like something is not right, do not brush it off! Report it and get it looked at.

The answer here is not panic. It is paying attention and looking out for each other, the way our communities out here always have.
