My fellowship with Common Cause NC was one that I will never forget. An awesome opportunity to both learn and serve!
Here is one of the highlights 👇🏽👇🏽 #NCGA
🚨 DAMN.
Ruby Bridges said the moment she finally understood what was happening during school integration was when a little white boy told her:
“My mom said I can’t play with you because you’re a nigger.”
She was SIX.
And she said hearing that felt like “a huge weight lifted,” because suddenly everything made sense.
Why the classrooms were empty.
Why adults were screaming.
Why U.S. Marshals had to escort her to school.
Not because of anything she did.
Just because of the color of her skin.
A six-year-old child realizing an entire country was angry at her for existing.
Y’all remember how we said during the campaign that leaning on fear of Trump & Project 2025 wasn’t enough?
And that Harris needed a bold & positive agenda? And that agenda needed to be more than stopping price gauging? And it needed to come sooner rather than later? And that the politics of redistribution was > than the politics of identity?
Yeah. I know.
Rep. Cleo Fields, whose 6th Congressional District was ruled unconstitutional, gives his testimony. Fields pointed out how the only four African-American representatives from Louisiana since 1877 are here. #lalege#lagov@LAFirstNews
The fact that almost EVERY former confederate state is moving to completely eliminate Black representatives almost immediately after the SCOTUS decision should be more than enough proof that voting rights still need protection and racism is far from gone in this country.
When I say the country is institutionally rigged for Republicans I’m talking about how Virginia gets their maps struck down after a two year process involving multiple legislative sessions and a statewide referendum but Tennessee can just decide not to enfranchise Memphis anymore
“To write for a Black family, you start asking yourself, ‘What am I doing?’ So we cast all Black actors for Gerald’s family — that helped with authenticity. Then we listened to Jamil, Gerald’s voice actor, loved his phrasing and pacing, and wrote more of what he brought. In the ’90s, we were doing our best just to show different ethnicities on screen, thinking it’d be cool for a kid to see Gerald and say, ‘Finally, a character that looks more like me.’ People tell me that now.”
Craig Bartlett, Creative Talent Network (2020)
Avery Brooks was delivering the performance of a lifetime in Far Beyond the Stars. I like that the editor knows this isn't right but he allows himself to be complicit anyway because he's too comfortable with the way things are and doesn't want to be the one to bring about change.
Artemis II crew is thousands of miles away from Earth
And they’re asking ground crew for help because they have two versions of Microsoft Outlook open and neither is working
This scene is now canon 😭
Liftoff.
The Artemis II mission launched from @NASAKennedy at 6:35pm ET (2235 UTC), propelling four astronauts on a journey around the Moon.
Artemis II will pave the way for future Moon landings, as well as the next giant leap — astronauts on Mars.
Most people wildly overestimate how long Black people have been legally free and recognized legally as fully human beings in America. From 68 until now, a minute fraction of time America has recognized Black people as full humans (on paper).
While we’re banning books…
Finland is teaching children in school how to recognize fake news and propaganda as part of critical thinking and civic responsibility. Some of this will seem very familiar.
Be. Like. Finland.
“Every time we forgive somebody, we put the gospel on display. If Lisa [for example] can forgive me, then maybe God can forgive me.” — Yana Conner
Yana Conner invites us to consider that forgiveness isn’t passive — it’s a reflection of God’s heart, forgiveness, and redemption. We are characters in His story of redemption and the restoration of all things so He calls us to be 'shalom' makers in our relationships and communities just as He is a 'shalom' maker with us. Every time we as people forgive each other, it can give hope to others that God can forgive them too.
