Imagine having the tools to upgrade your own security… but still needing someone else’s permission to secure the full system.

That’s one of the reasons @Starknet is exploring the possibility of becoming an independent L1.

The real quantum question isn’t “when will quantum computers break today’s cryptography?”

It’s whether a blockchain can adapt when that day arrives.

Starknet already has structural advantages here:

STARK proofs are built on hash-based cryptography (not elliptic curves vulnerable to Shor’s algorithm).

Native account abstraction lets developers ship new signature schemes (including post-quantum ones like Falcon) without a network-wide hard fork or protocol upgrade.

The security model is designed to evolve rather than being permanently locked to one cryptographic standard.

The catch: As an Ethereum L2, critical pieces of the stack (bridge, data availability, settlement) still depend on Ethereum’s cryptography and upgrade timeline. Full-system control is limited by the base layer.

An independent L1 would give Starknet more direct authority over when and how those foundational security upgrades happen.

That freedom comes with its own tradeoffs (security model, liquidity, ecosystem, operational responsibility), and Starknet is not fully quantum-safe today.

We’ve spent years comparing chains on speed, cost, and scalability.

Maybe the better long-term question is: which networks are actually designed to survive changes in the cryptography that protects them?
