I strongly support the idea of a separate city in India(preferably coastal) for core AI research and development. The only caveat being AQI needs to be at par with San Francisco. I’m not being hysterical at all. If India can build a city where AQI is < 20, THEY WILL COME.

This has been a massive idea for 30 years but the current government is giving it the strongest push it has ever had.
Let me explain what is happening;
This is the Middle East-India Deepwater Pipeline.
A proposed 2,000 km undersea gas pipeline from Oman straight to Gujarat. Cost around Rs 40,000 crore. It would carry 31 mmscmd of gas at depths up to 3,450 metres, which would make it one of the deepest pipelines ever attempted.
It bypasses the Strait of Hormuz, the chokepoint that nearly two-thirds of India's LNG imports pass through.
The Hormuz crisis this year was the trigger.
Asian spot LNG spiked from $10-12 to $24-25 per MMBtu during the disruption. OMC under-recoveries hit roughly Rs 1.98 lakh crore in Q1 2026 alone.
Now, SAGE, the private consortium behind this, laid it along the route at a cost of about Rs 25 crore, just to study the seabed.
SAGE has also finished both its technical and financial feasibility studies, and put a real costed proposal on the table.
They have suggested a 20-year supply contract at a pipeline tariff of $2-2.25 per MMBtu. So the homework to get started on the pipeline is now done.
The government has directed GAIL, Indian Oil and Engineers India to prepare a detailed feasibility report off SAGE's study in mid-May 2026.
If we get a positive report then they can open formal negotiations with Oman on pricing and financing.
But this will be incredibly hard to pull off. Here are a few reasons;
The Engineering
3,450 metres is near the limit of what has ever been done. A rupture that deep is brutally hard and expensive to fix.
The feasibility report has to prove it is maintainable.
The Pricing
In 1993, another version of this exact project was tabled but it died on economics. The entire case rests on locking competitive long-term pricing.
The Money
₹40,000 crore is the starting estimate but deep-sea projects routinely overrun. Who funds it and who eats the overruns matters.
The vision is right.
Bypassing Hormuz is exactly the long-term thinking India needs, and paired with ethanol, solar and domestic gas it builds extremely strong resilience.
The feasibility work is done, the test section is also done, so the urgency from the government is real.
But technically, this might be one of the hardest problems to solve this century.
