Major cheat code for life: Master the art of the fresh start. From a bad morning. From a bad interaction. From a missed workout. From a poor decision. The goal isn't to avoid the fall. It's to shorten the time between the fall and the reset. Fast recovery compounds.
My family and I watched the 60 Minutes interview with Donald Trump and Norah O’Donnell last night, and we were shocked. Seeing a president speak to a woman journalist with that level of contempt — and a clear allergy to facts — is disturbing, though at this point not unexpected given his pattern of behavior.
But that is the problem. Because when that level of disrespect from the highest office in the country repeats itself, it starts to trickle down into our culture and define what power looks like, shaping how boys and plenty of men see women and girls and what they come to accept as normal behavior.
In 2016 Norway gave every 5-year-old child an iPad.
Within a few years, Norway's reading scores plummeted and dropped below the OECD average.
They ranked dead last out of 65 countries.
Now Norway is spending millions of dollars to reverse this trend and get people reading.
This week as our kids take a deeply flawed STAAR test graded by AI and manipulated by Greg Abbott’s Texas Education Agency Commissioner, let’s remember that upon Greg Abbott’s direction, my amendment to the voucher scam bill to require the same test be given to private school kids who receive vouchers as our kids in public schools take was rejected.
As he forces a supersized STAAR test on our kids in public school, Greg Abbott knows that private school parents won’t tolerate the STAAR test.
We should not tolerate a governor who wrecks our public schools. It’s time to fire Greg Abbott and end the STAAR test.
So there’s an uproar and an alternate “All-American Halftime Show” when the #SuperBowl Halftime Show features a Latin, Puerto Rican performer…in 2026, when POTUS and his supporters are spewing xenophobic, racist rhetoric.
Meanwhile, Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States.
As my father said, “Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.”
I share this post in earnest and (what may prove a naive) hope that a few people caught in the situation I’m about to describe will hear instead of rushing to the usual tropes, criticisms and caricatures. For what it’s worth, I offer this in good faith.
Between 2016 and 2022, I faced a test of the genuineness of my faith so large and consequential, I’m almost at a loss to think of the right adjectives to describe it. It might not have been so big to someone else but it involved so much of my Christian identity, it was all but existential. Well more than that. It was a dying.
It is this test that helps me understand why people who seem deeply devoted to the Lord Jesus and hold the scriptures in highest esteem also hold to a system, institution or leader no matter what they do and defend a side or individual to a degree that is baffling.
I can tell you why because I had to face every bit of it. Identity, community, camaraderie, what we’ve known and loved, what part of it we still love, the people we loved, the people we still love, reputation, what people will think, how you will be judged and condemned and thrown over to the other side who doesn’t want you either. And to whom you also do not align and would not belong. Friendships. How you will be misunderstood and misrepresented. How adrift and alone you will feel. How disliked.
And then there’s this and it would be a mistake to minimize it: your JOB. Your source of income. Your vocation.
This is the part of the crisis I most write these words to convey because I think they are most in play for many right now, whether in media, ministry or politics.
Let me try to put this in the words that were constantly resonant in my spirit in those years. And to this day.
Though you have no other place to go, Beth, and no place to fit and it not only MAY have financial repercussions but WILL have financial repercussions to the ministry and to your family and will also make them targets and none of it will ever look the same or be the same, will you choose what you believe to be right and put everything else in your vocational life at risk?
This is what is at risk for many people whose professional reputations and positions are tied up with leaders, institutions and political parties. Mine was, too. The cost is enormous and the options are often untenable. And so there we are.
Having to cast ourselves on the mercy of God. Not for a third way. But as THE ONLY WAY. The only truth. The only life.
I’ve made multiple errors in judgment. Jumped too quickly to condemn. Spoken wrongly. Remained silent wrongly and confusingly. I never get it completely together.
But what I will tell you is that I believe we are meant first and foremost to call out our own house, our own side, and our own identity group for its mind-boggling hypocrisy. These were my people. Evangelicals. Conservatives.
Claim what you will but I know who I am:
I am pro life from conception to casket.
I am pro small government.
I am pro godliness and the pursuit of a holy life.
I am pro marriage and family and pro-those God calls to remain single and sanctified and I’m deeply thankful for them.
I am pro traditional sexual ethics.
I am pro love of God and love of neighbor and the dignity of every person as an image bearer of Christ.
I am pro love all.
I am pro church. I believe in the community of the saints.
I am pro Bible study to the death and believe the aim of all discipleship is to know and love and follow and emulate Jesus Christ.
I am pro gospel. Dear God in heaven, I am pro gospel. I believe there is one name by whom we must be saved. Jesus.
What I am not is pro Trump.
Wasn’t pro Clinton. Wasn’t pro Biden. But those were not the candidates many in the world that I loved so much were cheering on.
I accept that Donald Trump is my president. I pray for him on a regular basis. I’m a law abiding citizen and pay my taxes. But I believe Trump fosters something in people that makes them lose their way.
The idea that voucher-funded private schools should get to hide their results from taxpayers is ridiculous on its face until you remember we’re in the Trump era
It is increasingly clear that the careless mass introduction of 1:1 devices (on each kid's desk) in the 2010s was, at best, a waste of billions that could have been spent on teachers. At worst: a major cause of declining ed outcomes.
Here is a link to the @StarTribune coverage. I've also appreciated how their President and CEO (@grove) has been actively sharing their coverage along with coverage of other outlets. I'm sure news desks do, too. He gets it. /2 https://t.co/x8Sc6U4EtU
One of my former research assistants was killed by ICE in Minneapolis today😢
Alex was the kindest, sweetest human and a ICU nurse with a bright future ahead of him
May his soul rest in peace and this senseless carnage stop💔
If you’re struggling right now in any way, skip the life hacks for a minute.
Go to church this Sunday.
Even if you don’t normally go. Even if you’re “spiritual not religious.” Even if you have PTSD from the religious boredom of church as a kid. Just go sit in the back row and be still for an hour.
Almost everything in your life right now is optimized for production or consumption. Slack, spreadsheets, TikTok, email, sales calls. All output and input. Almost nothing is sacred, quiet, or unmonetized.
Church is one of the last places left that isn’t trying to sell you something or steal your attention. It’s an hour built around the idea that you are more than your revenue, or your value. It's one of the few places where the only goal is to confess your flaws, let them go and have some faith.
It's a place that will welcome everyone, even and maybe especially if you hate yourself right now.
Sit, stand, sing, or just listen. Let someone read words that have outlived every empire and every market cycle.
Let your brain remember: money is a tool, not a god. You are not the sole author of your story.
You’ll walk back out into the same world, same problems, same bank account, but it will feel a little less loud and a little less about you. That’s insanely useful if you’re carrying heavy stuff right now.
Tomorrow, you can go back to your problems.
Today, give yourself permission to just be a human.
If things are brutal right now, consider this your permission slip: Close the laptop. Go to church. Let God be bigger than your to‑do list for one hour.
