I’ve followed Scotland since I was 15 years old. I’ve travelled to all three games here in America and, like thousands of other members of the Tartan Army, I’ve lived every kick of the ball. The Tartan Army have put in the performances, brought the creativity and backed the team relentlessly. That’s why this isn’t about two defeats. It’s about recognising a pattern we’ve now seen for far too long.
The biggest question isn’t whether Scotland have reached the knockout stages. It’s whether we actually deserve to.
Against Haiti, yes, we won, but a deflected John McGinn goal was all we had to show for it. This was our chance to announce ourselves back on the World Cup stage. Instead, we laboured, created very little and never really put Haiti under sustained pressure. Winning matters, but performances matter too.
Against Morocco, we once again paid the price for poor defending. We gave ourselves a mountain to climb and although Morocco looked vulnerable in the second half, Scotland never adapted. We remained disjointed, failed to take advantage when the game was there to be rescued and ultimately paid the price.
Then came Brazil.
Nobody expected Scotland to dominate Brazil. But there is a difference between respecting the opposition and fearing them. Scotland looked like a team waiting for something to happen rather than trying to make something happen.
The biggest frustration for me was the lack of adventure. Why wasn’t Ben Gannon-Doak starting? Against the world’s best teams, pace and unpredictability are exactly what you need. Instead, we reverted to caution.
It also felt like our biggest players disappeared. Scott McTominay and John McGinn have carried Scotland for years, but they struggled to influence the biggest games when we needed them most.
And that’s what concerns me.
This feels remarkably similar to Euro 2024. Two years later we’re having exactly the same conversation. The same tactical approach. The same lack of creativity. The same inability to turn possession into genuine chances.
People will point to qualification and say, “We got here.”
They’re right.
But qualification papered over cracks that were already visible.
Even during qualifying there were warning signs. The performances weren’t consistently convincing. We relied on moments rather than sustained quality. Yes, there were outstanding performances, particularly against Denmark, but too often results masked deeper issues.
At major tournaments that simply isn’t enough.
There’s another uncomfortable conversation we have to have.
This is an ageing Scotland squad. We’ve remained heavily reliant on the same core of players for years. These players deserve enormous respect for ending Scotland’s long wait for tournaments, but international football moves quickly.
Every player has an expiry date at the highest level. Some of our core players now look a yard slower against elite opposition, and that matters.
Steve Clarke deserves huge credit for transforming Scotland’s fortunes and leading us back to major tournaments.
But with a new four-year contract comes a new challenge.
Can he evolve?
Can he trust younger players sooner?
Can he refresh a squad that now looks in need of fresh energy?
Because if we continue with the same personnel and the same tactical approach, we’ll be having this exact conversation again after the next tournament.
The Nations League in September gives Scotland an opportunity to reset.
To introduce younger players.
To challenge established names.
To build a team that isn’t simply grateful to be there, but genuinely believes it belongs there.
Scotland has made enormous progress.
But qualification cannot be the destination.
It has to be the starting point.
Ruben Neves on Diogo Jota 💔
“I still talk to him. Few people know this. We have a WhatsApp group with Rute and Diogo, and it's still there, and we continue to talk there. Whenever something special happens, I have the conversations archived on my WhatsApp so I can continue to send him messages”
“It was very difficult. The day after the news, for me, is the most difficult day of my life. The most important aspect for me to be able to play was wanting to play for Diogo first”

On this day in 2017, Liverpool signed Mo Salah from AS Roma for just under £37m.
Nine years and 257 goals later, it's fair to say that it'll go down as one of the greatest signings in the Reds' history! 🇪🇬👑 #LFC
We get to sing this special Mo Salah song one last time at Anfield on Sunday.
Mo Salah signing for Liverpool has to be by far the best 35m spent in the history of football. What a player, what a man.
#LFC#YNWA 🇪🇬 👑
"Poetry in motion”
One of my all-time favourite Derby goals and moments. Divock Origi, rising in the 94th minute to snatch glorious winner at Anfield. Priceless!
#LFC
Most astonishing part of the stat:
Giggs: Took 963 games to get 271
Rooney: Took 559 games to get 276
Salah: Took just 421 games for 277.
That's why we defend him so hard.
An All-time great.
LFC legacy etched in stone @MoSalah 👍
Everyone keeps asking whether Ahmed Al-Ahmad is Muslim or Coptic Christian.
I understand the instinct given the stare of the world. His name suggests he is likely Muslim, and all indications point that way.
But it reminds me of something my old headmaster once said when asked whether a certain schoolboy was White, Black or Coloured.
“He’s none of those,” he replied.
“He’s a Grey Boy.”
Ahmed Al-Ahmad is an Australian.
That’s what matters.
On a beach in Sydney, a man who runs a fruit shop bravely stepped forward and disarmed a terrorist, saving many lives. Not because of theology. Not because of politics. But because he was a decent human being who chose courage over fear.
If he is Muslim, then what a powerful rebuke to those who choose to hijack the faith in that country, for violence.
If he is Lebanese by heritage, what a beautiful reminder of what immigrants give to the countries that welcome them.
He is simply a man who did the right thing, and that alone is enough.
We are tearing the world apart by obsessing over labels - religion, race, tribe, ideology, identity - when the truth is far simpler.
Strip any of us down to the bone and we are identical. The differences are clothes we put on, not truths written into nature.
Religion that divides is not faith; it is doctrine.
Faith should unite.
It should protect life.
It should always choose love over hate.
A Muslim man saved Jewish people on an Australian beach, celebrating Hanukkah 🕎
A universe of history, migration, chance and humanity converged in one single moment - and goodness won.
Today, I don’t want to see people arguing about what Ahmed Al-Ahmad is.
I want us to honour who he was in that moment.
A brave man.
A good man.
A proud son, and father.
A fruit seller who became a hero.
A great Australian 🇦🇺

Folks I’ve kept in regular contact with sacked @dorsetpolice officer PC Lorne Castle & after being told on Friday that he has been granted his Appeal against dismissal on ALL the grounds submitted he’s asked me to release the following statement on his behalf👇
“I am limited on what I can say at this time; however I am pleased that my Appeal against dismissal from Dorset Police has been granted on all the grounds that were submitted on my behalf;
This past 6 months have been very difficult for me; losing the job that I loved of serving the people of Dorset of which was an honour that I spent 10yrs of my life doing & to end up being dismissed without notice I’ll be honest has left me shattered;
Both the hurt & pain has been enormous & devastating in equal measures; plus losing my good reputation has also taken its toll;
I’m very grateful that I have had the support of my wife & family through some horrible & difficult months for me;
Also the support from so many people from all over Britain; from both the public & serving & retired police officers has been quite overwhelming & has been a great source of comfort & I would absolutely like to thank each & everyone of them it’s given me some light through some very dark times;
I now look forward to my Appeal against dismissal hearing & hope that justice will prevail & that my good name & reputation is restored which is my absolute priority;
Once again I thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for their continued support”
End
Folks I’m aware of all the facts over the sacking of @dorsetpolice PC Lorne Castle as I’m one of the Two Ret officers supporting him; I’ve met him & he’s a decent man; a decorated good hard working cop; calling a violent knife carrying thug who had just assaulted two other people & was struggling & obstructive during an arrest a ‘Bitch’ is Neither Misconduct or Gross Misconduct in my books & he should NEVER have been disciplined let alone sacked,
To Destroy a Decorated police officer & cause him to lose his employment & pay overnight for calling someone a ‘Tame’ name ie a Bitch under such circumstances is a GROSS Over reaction & NOT GROSS MISCONDUCT; at worst? Words of advice by duty Inspector & get back out & get on with your job;
Instead? a very prolonged Investigation put on restricted duties ie non public contact for over a year is just about the biggest over reaction I’ve ever seen;
In policing we deal with the most violent obstructive & abusive in society & occasionally we may swear or use strong language during the very short period of arrest it’s called ‘Control & Containment’
Would PC Castle call Maggie Smith who reports her purse or pedal bike stolen a Bitch? NO; or Davd Jones who has had his van or work tools stolen? NO!
In my 31yrs I was a highly commended officer I stopped dozens of thugs carrying a knife who were very violent obstructing & abusive & Non Compliant;
Did I swear at any of them? Yes I did; struggling standing up or on the ground I would occasionally shout “stop fucking struggling” “give me your arm & stop being a fucking dickhead” “You mate are fucking nicked”👇
It’s all about as I state ‘Control & Containment’ did any of the suspects ever complain about me? None; Did the suspect in the case of PC Castle complain to police? NO it was another officer Not involved in the arrest that saw it on PC Lorne’s BWC & ‘mentioned’ it to a supervisor a Sgt who then mentioned it to an Insp; neither intended to take it further👇
However a SUPT became aware of this matter & made himself busy by putting PC Castle under formal investigation & the rest as they say is history;
This case epitomises the depths & quality type of Senior Management that policing has now plumbed; PC Castles Chief Constable could have had this matter dealt with ‘Internally’ ie words of advice by his line managers Sgt Insp & that would be the end of it BUT alas no; instead a Full Blast Disciplinary Investigation was launched wasting many officers time & money to be wasted & PC Castles Crime? Calling a thug a ‘Bitch’
The Chair of PC Castles Formal Disciplinary hearing was Wiltshire Police Assistant Chief Constable Deb Smith; who deemed the word ‘Bitch’ so serious that she deemed it worthy of Immediate Dismissal for not showing Curtesy & Respect to a Knife carrying obstructive & difficult thug who had apparently just assaulted two other people hence the call that PC Castle had adopted in his patrol car & thereafter searched & identified the suspect!
KARMA is truly a ‘BITCH’ as the SUPT who stirred the shit against PC Castle later found himself suspended/on restricted duties himself under Investigation for Gross Misconduct;
Policing has the wrong type of Leadership in people like Chief Constable Amanda Pearson & Assistant Chief Constable Deb Smith Two heartless cold women who have destroyed a good honest decent decorated police officers career & had devastation effect on his life;
The SUPT who initiated this matter did so as some senior officers believe it will look good on their Cv’s as they clamber for high promotion within policing;
I wonder when was the last time our Amanda & Debs last did a late or night shift & rolled around with a knife or drug carrying un-co-operative thug? Probably never as they whizzed up the portion ladder & such people have lost the true understanding of what front line cops face day in & day out in the Dan & difficult world of today’s policing!
PC Castle MUST win his Appeal & be Reinstated #JUSTICE
