Mothers (over 30 different hospitals) report a problem with ‘enforced privacy’ while breastfeeding (& the accompanying shame). Curtains being closed on them mid-conversation and not ONE example of a pump designated for paediatrics. Dr Lyndsey Hookway at #bfconf
1/ Our paper on the importance of sexed language in maternity argued that desexing language regarding inherently sexed states risks misunderstanding and other deleterious outcomes. We had only reason, anecdote and fundamental research underpinning. https://t.co/bIJxM8p8hq
‘The regulations are not designed to limit access to infant formula, it is the manufacturers & retailers who set prices, and who do so in a manner which ensures high profit margins’
Fascinating & concerning data on the rise of #sweeteners in foods for sale in the US (from @marionnestle's latest blog) https://t.co/GItiAX28JG This surely must be the case in the UK BUT our govt is not monitoring despite health risks: https://t.co/xZTP4vokqj
Leading paediatricians speak about ⬆️families turning to A&E for advice & support for issues that would previously have been managed by health visitors. 40% ⬇️in the number of health visitors impacts the whole system & will be felt by health, education & social care👇@HSJnews
Absolutely, and as a result many health visitors have left the profession. Urgent action is needed. 40% of workforce has been lost since 2015 when commissioning transferred to local authorities accompanied by year on year public health budget cuts. #TimetoAct@DHSCgovuk
A fifth of infants not receiving mandatory health visiting reviews with rates below pre-covid levels because of funding and staffing constraints.
So parents turning to emergency departments and GPs instead.
This is a bad way to run a modern healthcare system.

‘Nurses’ uniforms have always been impractical, when we of all people need clothes that move with us’
Jane Bates discusses why nurses’ smart scrubs will be a comfortable change of uniform > https://t.co/hkNYyhGZ45
Antenatal expression used to be discussed with those expecting complications. Now seen as normal for many.
Care needed.
Not everyone can easily express colostrum by hand antenatally. Some get very little/ nothing even with optimum techniques. We may damage confidence, not help.
Also worth considering how this mother’s account of her struggles to feed her baby illustrates the potential benefit of #breastfeeding support, for meeting the baby’s nutrition needs (for “free”) & so food security. Plus physical (& likely here) mental health benefits for mother
Don’t plan to co-sleep? You STILL need to know how to do it more safely because 91% parents who’ve co-slept didn’t plan to do it before their baby was born. Co-sleeping advice is essential info for every parent https://t.co/ps9kuS1EwR #SaferSleepWeek#LetsTalkAboutCoSleeping
We offer 2 levels of #SaferSleep training for professionals depending on whether giving safer sleep advice is a key part of your role (e.g. health visitor) or more opportunistic (e.g. paramedics, childcare staff). Sign up for online training: https://t.co/rAn0mz3nHB
