Randolph was one of the most important labor leaders of the 20th century, organizing and leading the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters in the 1920s and fighting for labor and civil rights throughout his lifetime.

In 1939, the OSCP joined the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters as a Canadian chapter. Salary increases soon happened. Name plates were also placed in sleeping cars to provide the porter's name. This stopped the practice of calling porters "George" or "boy".

#OTD 1899 Asa Philip Randolph was born. He was a labor unionist and civil rights activist that organized and led the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the first successful Black-led labor union.

They worked 400 hours a MONTH, were all called "George" regardless of their names and their union became the first Black labor organization in America to bring a major corporation to the table and WIN.

Sleeping-car service was prestige work and disguised servitude at once: brutal hours, wages built on tips, company spies, instant firings — and the erasure of even your NAME, every porter addressed as "George" after the company's founder, like property tagged with the owner's brand.

In 1925, A. Philip Randolph and the porters founded the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. Pullman answered with twelve years of espionage, firings, and stonewalling.

In 1937, Pullman signed. Millions in raises. Hours capped. Names restored to men.

@finnatcon It makes atrocities happening elsewhere seem not as bad. I as a white dude ain't going to tell Black ppl or Indigenous ppl their suffering isn't bad. Palestinians share more with concentration camp Jews than you and I and comparisons don't offer a solution other than being right

Pain isn't a contest. Colonialism has been enacted in the same ways. They've always shared strategies. World powers were the same vs Indigenous peoples of America to African chattel slavery. Only thing changes is time, technology for access to information and tools of oppression

@finnatcon By what metric? Historically, Congo has colonial brutality for over 500 yrs. Studies on historical trauma show its passed down. Indigenous ppl + African slaves in the Americas still face structural oppression for 100s of years, same as Sámi ppl. Hitler stole ideas from US slavery
