They're trying to make it conform to an anti-white narrative, e.g., that blacks are in danger from whites, when the stats show that's not the case. Blacks kill about twice as many whites as the reverse.

The most likely explanation is that the old man thought the kid was breaking in to his house. We used to handle tragic mistakes like this with no jail time and a civil case.
