The Vredefort crater in South Africa, with a diameter of approximately 300 km, is considered the largest impact crater. The first photo shows what remains of it after hundreds of millions of years. However, recent data suggest that Earth experienced a collision with a much larger celestial body. The trace of this collision is the Deniliquin multi-ring structure in southeastern Australia. Geophysical analysis has confirmed the existence of an impact structure 520 km in diameter featuring a central dome. Further evidence has been found indicating that the Deniliquin structure is an impact crater—the largest on Earth (though drilling results are still needed to provide definitive confirmation). In contrast, the crater formed by the Chicxulub meteorite—which wiped out the dinosaurs—was only 180 km in diameter.

This impact, however—judging by the estimated time of the event (the location is marked on the map)—triggered a far greater catastrophe: the Late Ordovician glaciation. Lasting 1.5 million years, this event caused the planet's first mass extinction 445 million years ago, resulting in the disappearance of about 85% of species and ending the dominance of trilobites in the seas and oceans (though other theories regarding the causes of this extinction also exist).
