94 out of every 100 Ather buyers pay Rs 14,000 to Rs 20,000 extra to get software features like Google Maps, voice commands, pothole alerts, and auto-hold on their scooter

That is not some niche add-on, Almost everyone buying it says yes. This software money, called non-vehicle revenue, now makes up 14% of what Ather earns. It grew 103% in single year.

That extra income is what helped Ather turn operating profitable for first time ever in Q1 FY27. Scooter brings customers in. Software keeps margins alive.

Ather and Hero are trying 2 different ways to make money from software on electric scooters. Ather charges Rs 14,000 to Rs 20,000 at purchase for its tech pack.

Hero charges Rs 999 per year for VIDA Edge subscription with navigation, remote controls, and vehicle health data. Ather gets big money upfront. Hero gets smaller payments every year but builds ongoing revenue as scooters stay on road.

Both prove same point - Margins in EV 2-wheelers come from paid software, not better motors or cheaper batteries

EV scooters crossed 10% of all 2-wheeler sales in India for first time in June 2026. Ather delivered 2.39 lakh units in FY26, growing 83%. Hero VIDA delivered 1.44 lakh, growing 196%.

At that volume, software revenue adds up fast. If 94% of 2.39 lakh Ather buyers pay Rs 14,000 to Rs 20,000 for tech packs, that is roughly Rs 170 Cr just from software per year.

TVS with SmartXonnect and Bajaj with TecPac run similar connected platforms but have not shared how much they earn from them yet
