The biggest change of viewpoint I ever went through in psych training was when I said “but what if they’re doing it for attention” and my supervisor was like “what’s wrong with needing attention?” and I realised I didn’t have an answer.
“if they wanted to they would”
leaves no room for nuance or other things people may be going through. it no longer aligns with my value system. are we meeting people where they’re at or meeting them with unrealistic expectations?
