This isn’t just the Hobsbawm thesis, this is how everyone understood things prior to the 60s/70s. During this period the left went from being understood as the radical wing of enlightenment inheritors, to being critics of the enlightenment’s totalizing force.

In the 50s, polish marxists tried to push all analytic philosophers away from philosophy and into math. Ironically, their engagement with the analytics ended up resulting in the polish "analytical-linguistic Marxism".
