KILLING OF SADIO CAMARA MALI’S DEFENCE MINISTER, AND KEY ARCHITECT OF MALI’S REVOLUTIONARY COUP

General Sadio Camara, Mali's Defence Minister and a key architect of the country's revolutionary break from French neo-colonialism, was killed on Saturday, 25 April 2026. A suicide truck bomb struck his residence in the garrison town of Kati, near Bamako. Camara exchanged fire with the attackers before succumbing to his wounds. His second wife and two grandchildren also died, and a nearby mosque was destroyed with some worshippers inside killed.

Camara was a core architect of the May 2021 military coup that brought Colonel Assimi Goïta to power. Under his leadership, Mali broke decisively from French influence: French “Operation Barkhane” troops withdrew, the French ambassador was expelled, French media outlets were suspended, and Western military structures were dismantled. The government pursued an independent security strategy while emphasising regional cooperation with other members of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), namely Burkina Faso and Niger.

The AES, formed in September 2023, has positioned itself as a beacon of African sovereignty. Mali has also approved the creation of a new state-owned mining enterprise to oversee national equity stakes in extractive projects, thereby reinforcing economic sovereignty.

For Pan-Africanists, Camara's legacy is clear: a revolutionary who helped pivot Mali away from French domination and toward genuine sovereignty. As General Goïta has declared: "We will not retreat. We will not betray our people. We will continue the fight for total liberation".

“When we discovered oil in Uganda, the major oil companies kept telling us refineries do not make money.”

Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni said this while speaking at The Africa We Build Summit 2026, hosted by the Africa Finance Corporation.

He stated that international oil companies advised Uganda against investing in refining after oil was discovered, arguing that refineries were not profitable.

However, Museveni said Uganda’s own analysis indicated otherwise, showing that a local refinery would be both viable and profitable.
