Levels of Human Spiritual Evolution
Under this theme, I describe the qualities, actions, personality traits, and mindset that define human beings at different stages of spiritual development—from the lowest to the highest. These distinctions are based on traditional references and lived examples. The stages on this spiritual ladder are as follows:

1️⃣ The Sinner
A person who engages in unethical or immoral behavior—ranging from minor wrongdoings to severe and shocking crimes. Determining where each person falls along this scale is a challenge I leave to you, the reader.

2️⃣ The Average Person
Someone who may occasionally commit small mistakes or minor sins yet also performs several good deeds.

3️⃣ The Wise
Individuals who are extremely cautious even about the smallest mistakes. They live with patience and moral discipline.

4️⃣ The Sadhu / Holy Person
Selfless and altruistic beings who consider serving others among their highest duties. They are humble, free from ego, and never prioritize themselves.
In common usage, the word “Sadhu” may be used loosely—sometimes referring to a gentle or naïve person, or even those who wear religious symbols such as vibuthi (holy ash), rudraksha beads, or the vertical naamam marks of Vishnu devotees while seeking alms (bhiksha). If such people simply think of God and live simply, they may be considered religious or spiritually inclined laypersons.
However, a true Sadhu, as intended here, is the one defined in the first two sentences above—someone who fully embodies selflessness and purity of heart. There is a saying: “If a Sadhu becomes angry, even the forest will perish.” This applies only to those genuine and extraordinary Sadhus of great inner strength and virtue.

5️⃣ The Discerning One
A person with deep insight and foresight. They offer sound, rational guidance, and uphold fairness and dharma even in complex situations. Their life aligns consistently with Vedanta.

6️⃣ The Highly Discerning One
Whether they have a family or not, they have mentally renounced attachment to family and worldly transactions. Their life itself is Vedanta. As a sage once said, “Absence of all wants is happiness.”
They live in constant inner joy.
Some may withdraw from society—living in solitude, accepting only occasional offerings, and avoiding unnecessary interactions. They may even push away those who seek their counsel, to prevent dependency. These renunciates still acknowledge the world’s reality and do not reject the worship of God or divine forms.

7️⃣ Divine Discerning Wise One
These individuals live on an exceptional spiritual plane. Traditionally, such people were revered Brahmin sages—Maharishis—embodying purity, discipline, and deep Vedic practice. Though some had families, they lived untouched by worldly impurities, like water on a lotus leaf. They were so spiritually elevated that others worshipped them as divine.

8️⃣ The Divine Sadhu
Devotees filled with intense, passionate devotion—like the Nayanmars and Alwars—performing extraordinary service to God with unwavering enthusiasm and divine fervor.

9️⃣ The Great Sage (Mahan)
Whether living as householders or renunciates, they are completely free of worldly attachment and hold love only for God. No negative force can influence them.

🔟 The renunciate who has renounced even the self
A being who has even renounced attachment to God as a separate entity—being fully rooted in spiritual power and eternal bliss.

1️⃣1️⃣ A Spiritual Knower
One who has united with the Cosmic Consciousness—the ultimate pinnacle of spiritual evolution.

After reading about each level of the spiritual journey, it is natural to wonder:
“Where do I stand on this ladder?”
That question becomes the beginning of true inner exploration.
