@gfletchy The 5th grade base ten standard about how every digit is 10x greater than the one on the right and 1/10 as great as the one on the left. Truly understanding this relationships is hard for many adults, and they’re 10. Plus assessing it is so wordy and awkward.
This is it—the quiet part out loud. One side here believes students have nothing in long-term memory, nothing of cognitive value they could bring to their own education. According to this orientation, which sees in students only deficits, no assets, they must be told everything.
@sage_stage For a *few* classes? That’s what, 75? 90?additional students on a teacher’s caseload in a subject that’s notorious for the off contract time required to grade student work and provide feedback? For students who receive no instruction? Does the department chair get 2 salaries?
@JayWamsted Basic multiplication facts are a 3rd grade standard. They are taught. I have never heard anyone advocate for skipping basic facts for calculators. By middle school they’ve had sundae parties/flash cards/mad minutes/xtra math, etc and it’s just time to move on. Bigger fish to fry.
