🟥ISIS spokesman Abu Hudhayfah was eliminated by Yemeni counterterrorism forces, backed by Saudi-led coalition special forces - @shebaintelligen While the U.S. intelligence apparatus insists ISIS is based in Africa, Abu Hudhayfah, the spokesman for the group, was found hiding in Yemen. Africa is only one territory in which ISIS operates, and it’s important that U.S. intelligence wakes up and starts working this problem in every region. Effective counterterrorism demands a precise understanding of our enemies’ operational activities rather than shaping threat assessments around political preferences or a desired narrative. It’s not that Africa doesn’t have ISIS elements; it’s focusing exclusively on a single region at the expense of the others is dangerous. Hudhayfah was hiding in a residential building with eight civilians—one man, two women, and five children. Although Hudhayfah was killed in the raid, two laptops, five mobile phones, and two tablets were recovered, and those devices might turn out to be one of the biggest wins from this operation. Killing the spokesman hurts ISIS, but learning who he was in contact with may matter far more. In addition to the devices, a person of interest survived after resisting and was then detained, given medical treatment before being moved to a secure location, and now might also give useful insight into the group. Hudhayfah was also seen as one of the group’s leading religious officials, holding ideological authority while running the Yemeni branch and taking part in the central media apparatus. Taking him off the board is more than dealing a blow to senior leadership, because at this point their structure is built to take losses. Most importantly, this instance illustrates how Yemen was sheltering a senior ISIS leader connected to the central leadership and media operations.
