The Disk-Exoplanet C/Onnection (DECO) is an ALMA Cycle 9 Large Program to ambitiously survey 80 disks in key molecules. We just wrapped up our Kick-Off Meeting graciously hosted at NRAO Charlottesville. What an inspiring group (especially the students)!

@astrocaits It’s NUTS. With my singleton c-section I hadn’t realized that by having my child put on my insurance that my out of pocket doubled the minute she arrived. So despite having hit my out of pocket max moments prior, suddenly on the hook for another $5k. Deeply messed up.

@jpw_hawaii @GregHerczeg @r_d_alexander Something entirely lost at DPR are the outsider voices - non ALMA users - who provide a really important perspective too. You don’t technically need a tac but need people to agree to read props… not easy.

@GregHerczeg @r_d_alexander Based on the first couple of cycles the case was made that outcomes were similar. However I suspect the quality of DPR may go down in time as the logic that leads to “averaging over 10 reviews eliminates outliers” to “why bother doing a good job if I’m just 1 of 10.”

@GregHerczeg @r_d_alexander There are definitely far more excellent proposals than time available. But I agree that the discussion aspect (and having to justify your opinion to others), leads to better outcomes. How to incorporate this better (without the cost of an in person tac) is the critical question!
