Hey @durbin.senate.gov and @amyklobuchar.com.
There may in theory be a case for the Combating Organized Retail Crime Act (CORCA). But the idea of expanding DHS/ICE's power NOW in a surveillance bill is nuts. Don't add it to the NDAA. Withdraw your support. No new powers for ICE.
“For many Democrats in Congress, calling out the cruelty and impunity of ICE has become a common refrain. Why, then, are some of these same representatives now co-sponsoring a bill that would give ICE new power to harvest Americans’ personal information?”

NEW from me for @MSNOWNews:
The CORCA bill could hand your private data to ICE — and charge American taxpayers. So why on earth are anti-ICE champions @amyklobuchar and @RubenGallego co-sponsoring it? https://t.co/lCHbZgEGeG
I wrote about the new bogeyman being used to justify Trojan horse legislation that grants ICE new surveillance powers (which 144 House Dems voted for last month): Cargo theft.
"While many Democrats clearly saw the Combating Organized Crime Act as a measure to protect retailers, some saw through it as a giveaway to Homeland Security. Perhaps most tellingly, ten Democratic co-sponsors of the bill withdrew their support the night of the vote.
Almost immediately after the House vote, the backlash began. In Michigan, state Rep. Donovan McKinney said that his opponent 'just voted again to hand ICE & Trump your data.' Across the country, several other Democratic candidates attacked their primary opponent for their vote, including Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan, Ethan Wechtaluk in Maryland, and Jason Poulos in Massachusetts."

Public safety isn't built through fearmongering or expanding surveillance. It's built by investing in housing, health care, violence prevention, and community-led solutions.
Grateful to partner with @verainstitute for their Serious About Safety Campaign to make that a reality.
@RepAuchincloss votes again to expand the executive power of the Trump admin., this time giving Sec. of Education Linda McMahon the power to determine “reasonable suspicion of identity fraud.” He has also recently voted to expand the surveillance powers of ICE (CORCA) and to extend FISA Section 702 warrantless searches of Americans' communications.
Less than a month ago, Rep. Mfume voted for CORCA, a bill that gives ICE unfettered access to the data retailers have collected on you.
Home Depot, who helped write this bill, donated to his campaign.
@PabloReports And there was her more recent vote supporting CORCA - a bill that expands DHS and ICE, allowing them to share and receive Americans’ private data with corporations.
.@RepSarahElfreth likes to talk about restraining ICE, but she just voted YES on CORCA which gives DHS even more powers to conduct surveillance on you and turn over your personal data to ICE.
Not only did she vote for it, she CO-SPONSORED it.
Sarah continues to support ICE.
This week, the House voted to expand ICE’s powers to go after people accused of shoplifting and minor retail crimes, enabling them to collect and share even more of our private data to aid their mass surveillance machine.
And who was noticeably absent from the vote? My opponent. For all his talk of standing up to ICE, he is failing to show up when it matters and when our rights are actually on the line.
Tonight, after a year of screaming about holding ICE accountable, 144 House Democrats joined 203 Republicans to pass CORCA, a bill that grants DHS and ICE sweeping new power to collect American citizens' personal information under the guise of combating retail theft.
@JGKoufos@USATODAY@WhiteHouse What about their new legislation to mandate cash bail, even for low-level, non-violent offenses? Seems like that will set up a system where the rich go home, while poorer people have to stay in jail.
@SenatorWarnock Voted for a bill that will allow a 10 year old child accused of stealing something small from a store to be separated from his family and put in indefinite detention. Tell me how that helps anyone?
