A4: The beauty of PBL is that they are creating the questions about what they need to know, so they become more engaged to identify the answers to their created questions. PBL is also not scripted, so they are able to lead the learning to meet their needs.

Absolutely, we have checkpoints for each design phase that the students either do a self-reflection based on the rubric, present to another group, or present to the teacher for constructive feedback.

A3: We assess students each term on the 21st-century skills, and students create goals for improvement for the following term. We also use student contracts, have workshops organized in our LMS for students to refer back to, and use an online calendar.

A2: Student thinking can be challenged by identifying what they need to know, creating workshops based on those N2K, and having dialogue between students focused on the topic to extend their thinking. The teacher facilitates this student-centered process.

The instructional model that we utilize at our schools is PBL. PBL provides an inquiry-based learning model that gives students voice and choice in their learning journey.

A3: I think building a relationship with the student to understand the root cause of the assignments not being complete is the most important step. Once we figure out the root cause, we can put support in place to address that specific problem.

I love how you collaborate with the student making a small management plan for the goal that they want to accomplish that day. If they get too far behind, the amount of work can feel like it cannot be accomplished. Small chunks help to make progress.

A2: I would communicate missing work by placing a zero holding place in the grade book for the assignment, follow-up personally with students on missing work, call parents to let them know of work that was missing, and have the student stay after school.

A1: There can be various reasons why students have missing assignments. It can be that they do not understand the content, don't engage with the activity, do not have the time to complete the assignment or the activity may not be differentiated, etc.

When analyzing political cartoons, I would also hide most of the political cartoon and only show small squares at a time. The students would identify everything that they could within that frame and as new frames were made visible, their interpretations changed

I like the sketch and tell format. These would also be good to include in the word wall to allow students to see the different perspectives from other students.

This is a wonderful way to engage the students in the topic of study. I would be so curious about the lesson of the day if I were a student and walked into this crime scene!

I think it depends on the content that is being taught to determine which instructional strategy is utilized. I like to incorporate role-play, political cartoons, and videos when teaching.

I am a former US History, Texas History, and World Cultures teacher. One of my favorite lessons to teach was Manifest Destiny.

We will not meet perfection, nor should we expect that in others, but we need to give ourselves and our students grace in learning that may look different than it did prior to this uncertain time. We need to cultivate the grit to keep trying!
