@lauriewired Cloud gaming is a non-starter for most of my library due to mods. Even if the latency was good and it were affordable, I'm not doing paid modding ecosystems and paying a subscription fee to do something I can do at home. IDC if GPUs are expensive, I'll buy them anyway.
@Grummz Tim Sweeney would be doing everything Apple, Steam and Google have done to him if he were in the position to do so, all of his advocacy is completely self-serving.
Compared w/ 2TB model ($1349+tax):
+ MUCH BETTER GAMING PERFORMANCE
+ $100 cheaper
+ 2x RAM
+ 512gb more storage
+ ROUGHLY 2X GPU PERFORMANCE
+ Add 2C/4T CPU
- Slightly lower single thread CPU perf.
- Lower memory bandwidth
- Case is 18x9x14 in vs ~6 in^3
- You have to DIY.

@ZeeZedZee@protossbonjwa@TW0HEADEDBEAST nobody serious about PC gaming cares about case volume. 6in^3 is a novelty and it will wear off in three years when the steam machine is incapable of playing any new games. matx mini and itx are still small, quiet, and upgradeable instead of being destined for the landfill.
@jimjim198782151@revenant_MMXX Plenty of games on steam don't actually require steam to use, once you download them they're as easy to copy and run on other machines as a GOG game. I mean they're not the majority, not by a longshot, but it really depends on the game.

The flame that burns twice as bright burns half as long.
@ID_AA_Carmack You guys should all get the band back together for one last tour, just put something together for the love of the game, with no commercial expectations. I bet it would be awesome.
@protossbonjwa@TW0HEADEDBEAST Don't need to. Because the CPU in the Steam Machine due to being a nerfed laptop chip and also being power limited is roughly on par with a 3700X, and any idiot can put together an R5 5600/9060XT build for the same money. Go look at the GamersNexus benchmarks.
@MisanthropicZo1@theminitartlet PC gamers who just want to play games from their couch would be much better served with a modest mini PC or an Nvidia Shield type device for game streaming.
@theminitartlet Depends on your definition of SFF. For a MiniITX build the price premium is about $25-50 over a comparable MATX Mini build for something marginally smaller and significantly more annoying to put together.
@NoahJarboe@SRC692@Thirteenthsteps If you already have a capable gaming PC of any sort and you care highly about form factor you can pick up a modest mini PC or an Nvidia Shield and stream games over your home network for a fraction of the cost.
@Fan21Esports@Thirteenthsteps I can't wait for someone to mention CEC like that isn't part of the HDMI spec and a feature of every GPU with an HDMI port.
@SRC692@Thirteenthsteps That's what bugs me about this discourse. I see no problem w/ people saying "IDC if it's a bit overpriced, I like the form factor and want to support what they're doing." It's all the "Actually it's not a bad value" or "you can't build something comparable/better for the price."
@MartinPlay88654@Thirteenthsteps I mean, a little, but not really, depends on the game and resolution. Unlike the Steam Machine this is arguably a real 4k gaming PC where there would be no bottleneck, and you can upgrade this one when you get more money. 5800X3D 10th anniversary is coming back in a couple days.
@SRC692@Thirteenthsteps I could do essentially the same build in a MiniITX case to make it marginally smaller at the cost of making it slightly more expensive and way harder to put together, but lets be honest, these people don't actually care about that, at that point they just want to score points.
@Thirteenthsteps "Now make it a six inch cube" incoming, a completely arbitrary distinction that requires the "gaming PC" to lose out on a huge chunk of its ability to game and that literally none of these lemmings actually care about other than to win a twitter argument.
@Thirteenthsteps Here's my $1000 build. Its not as good as one with a 9070, but it's still heaps better than the Steam Machine, and $125 cheaper. Looking forward to your next goalpost shift.
