The enormous frigidarium of the Baths of Diocletian in Rome, built around 300 AD – repurposed by Michelangelo in 1563 into the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels and the Martyrs, though retaining many of its ancient red granite columns and pilasters. A rare glimpse at the scale and majesty of a Roman imperial bathhouse.
Michelangelo actually had to raise the ancient floor by three metres to match the level of the sixteenth-century streets and protect against rising moisture, so the original ancient space was even greater still; about fourteen metres of the seventeen-metre columns are visible today, their original Roman bases hidden under the basilica floor and which Michelangelo replaced by reproductions.

Justinian’s western provinces which he had liberated from barbarian rule were under assault, the Emperor Justin II needed to act.

“These wars, along with a recurrence of the plague, indefinitely postponed the time when Byzantine Italy, Africa, and Spain could be real assets to the empire. Rather than send eastern troops to the West, the emperor chose to attack Persia, with which Justinian and nearly all his predecessors had tried to keep the peace.”

This mistake permanently doomed Italy to a downward trend and an eventual end of the Roman identity there.
