1/7 Canada's Battery Innovation Roadmap is here! 🇨🇦With strategic investments and partnerships, we're preparing to lead the global battery industry by 2035. Dive into the roadmap: 🔋 #BatteryLeadership#Innovation https://t.co/D5SMTUkPaN #BatteryLeadership#Innovation
"If you have, like Canada does, a bunch of metal, and the ability to process that metal into cathode, then you’re controlling a piece of the supply chain, and that’s where all the value is" -@bentleyballan in Financial Post on #industrialpolicy

This week's announcement of investments by Honda marks an exciting move forward in Canada's Net-Zero #industrialstrategy. @bentleyballan@moekabbara and I break down why in this new piece
Honda’s $15B project in Ontario is more than just another investment in Canada's growing EV sector: It will be the first in Canada to take a full supply chain approach, using the new federal EV supply chain investment tax credit.
Learn why that matters: https://t.co/SmyiIgkDMY
Canada's next big battery investment includes not just the EV battery factory, but also cathode and separator. Absolutely great to see some of the upstream value chain in this deal.

@bentleyballan of @CanAccelerator comments in this @TheEconomist article on how critical projects in the #CriticalMinerals processing supply chain are. Many challenges to getting these right - government support needed in face of market "imperfections" https://t.co/99TjDOZLq0
"Transforming our energy systems to net zero is now as much about economic survival and competitiveness as it is about environmental responsibility."

In our brief "Electron, Rocks, and Brains" we also describe this complacency in how we look at our economy and its standing in the world, but we also note how we can change that:

@bentleyballan
Canada is actually moving backwards with solar, wind, battery, 🔋. We are captured by the o&g industry, electrical utilities, and the nuclear industry.
Forget about foreign investment, the cdn companies I am involved with aren't investing here. We are the land that time forgot
Helpful, granular insights into the #masstimber sector in BC, especially on #skills, by @SP_Inst - great to have been able to collaborate with these folks as @CanAccelerator works with partners on a roadmap for scaling the sector nationally
New blog by @HemDholakia explores the economic upsides of #MassTimber in #BC and the challenges that government, industry + educational institutions must address to capture this opportunity.

Full reports with @fsc_ccf_en launch next week!
It might not be so simple - what happens to AB and SK in the transition could have #macrofinancial implications for the whole Canadian economy, which we discuss in our brief, Electrons, Rocks, and Brains
https://t.co/DhfUdS3lzY @CanAccelerator
Personally, IMO this is really a provincial thing: BC & Québec & probably MB & Atlantic Canada are going to be just fine in the global transition, Ontario can hitch its wagon to the US IRA+ if it’s smart, but Alberta & maybe SK are in serious danger of “rustbelting”themselves.
In the @theHillTimes@MoeKabbara says transforming our energy systems to net zero is as much about economic survival & competitiveness as it is about environmental responsibility,’ a message @CanAccelerator is delivering today on Queen’s Park. #onpoli https://t.co/BsqdEmwm2u
Encouraged to see our new report "Electrons, Rocks, and Brains" resonated with at least one parliamentarian in Ottawa! Just what we want to see - a national discussion on these geopolitical issues and economic implications @SenCoyle
A recent report from @CanAccelerator indicates that for Canada to be a global power in the energy transition we need a strategic push. I asked @SenMarcGold what Canada is doing to develop an ambitious net zero industrial strategy.

"Canada’s hopes to be a global power in the low-carbon transition could be dashed unless it develops national strategy based on competitive strengths and aligns its diplomacy, trade and public policy, a new report warns." @the_Jeff_Jones @globeandmail

Great synopsis by Jeff Jones in a @globeandmail article of our new @CanAccelerator report, Electrons, Rocks and Brains, on importance of bringing geopolitics into thinking about economic prosperity and resilience @bentleyballan

#Oil and #gas shaped geopolitics in the last century. Clean #energy will increasingly define it in the 21st century.

“many Canadians turn to central air conditioners to cool their homes … this is a missed opportunity to switch to heat pumps, which are more energy-efficient and can both heat and cool.”
