Liam Neeson auditioned for one complete day with Steven Spielberg for the part of Oskar Schindler in "Schindler's List" (1993). After that, he didn't hear anything about the decision of the audition & there were rumours circulating about the casting for the part. In early 1993, Spielberg, his wife, Kate Capshaw, and his mother-in-law went to see Neeson on Broadway in "Anna Christie".
They went backstage to see Liam Neeson after the performance. Kate Capshaw's mother, moved by the play and his performance, was crying. Liam Neeson felt so bad and he took her in his arms and hugged her. Kate Capshaw then said to Spielberg, "That's exactly what Oskar Schindler would have done." He was then cast for the role.
