I refuse to give into fearful paranoia about the people around me. I refuse to see average people as unsalvageable. I refuse to perpetuate the atomization and isolation that this hierarchical system creates. I will live and embody the opposite impulse. And you should too.
@TheOutsiderHum1 I intentionally say, “It’s not rocket surgery,” when referring to something achievable that’s troubling a person. Does that make me a bad person?
Devastated to learn that the political scientist James C. Scott recently passed away. Such a generous, brilliant, and original thinker, from "Weapons of the Weak" to "Moral Economy of the Peasant" to "Seeing Like a State" to "Against the Grain."
@corymassimino Baby steps. The misinformation of American and allied propaganda on communism really stuck. I’ve seen this quite a bit too, and while it’s a short step to simply see it as amusing, just one more step and I see potential for change in these people. Ultimately it’s what we need
@bayesianboy Extrapolating from such a nebulous starting point seems fraught, but only if judged seriously. Avoiding that gives them room to make stuff up, have it seem reasonable (or believe it), and exploit deficiencies in our social fabric to further dominate us. I dislike all of it.
I wanted to write a thread about a beautiful future in which a unified humanity pursues the mystery of being, but I don't think I can top this one from a while back.
@TheOutsiderHum1 As the connection to X weakens, it seems we have a collective propensity to repurpose Y to other ends that often seriously fail us. Especially so in cultures where care and respect for others and the collective are diminished. As if norms are what we conform to without purpose
@TheOutsiderHum1 If reviews were actually exposed we’d catch a lot of deception, obfuscation and incompetence. In reviews themselves. Ironically, I think the OP speaks to that, only darker impulses. “Shame is a great disincentive!”
@TheOutsiderHum1 Interesting for their biochemistry, and the challenge they pose to the concepts of life held by most biologists. Personally, I find these commonly held beliefs to be pretty telling of the degree of engagement many biologists have with their expertise.
@TheOutsiderHum1@StupendousGrav1@visakanv A manifestation of alienation, where others are adversaries to be beaten by any means available, reason be damned. Violence, essentially. It contrasts with collective interests, where we could learn together.
Indigeneity isn't about being somewhere first. It's about how a people are placed within a network of social/political relations, including non-human relations.
