Tomen nota de estos médicos latinas y latinos haciendo match en grandes especialidades y grandes hospitales en USA. Son nuestros líderes del mañana. Valórenlos por que se vuelven motor para la juventud latina. #IMG#proudIMG

This #WomenInMedicine Month and #HispanicHeritageMonth, we’re proud to recognize AAMC ACE awardee Melanie Valentin. A fourth-year med student at @MSUMD & proud daughter of immigrants, Melanie is advocating for reducing health disparities: https://t.co/5j4IEcTFi1
Residency starts this week, and words or tears cannot express the gratitude and excitement I feel. Thank you to the people and places that made me who I am today. I'm living my wildest dreams. #SiSePuede#FirstGenDoc#DermTwitter
Why are med schools offering classes on structural racism, you ask?
Because of Henrietta Lacks
Because of the Tuskegee Study
Because of experimental procedures on enslaved Black women
Because of unnecessary procedures on women in ICE detention centers
Because if you are Black or Hispanic & come to a hospital with a heart attack, you are more likely to experience a worse standard of care
The reasons are endless.
No. Just no. First gen is NOT when you’re first in your family to get a PhD. It gets so tiring seeing people claim barriers that then erase the incredibly significant barriers some of us actually faced.
“Patient is a poor historian”
🙄🙄🙄
IT IS NOT THE PATIENT’S JOB TO BE A TALENTED HISTORIAN.
It is your (our) job to be a talented history taker.
Whether that means coaxing out details, teasing out sensitive facts, explicitly asking relevant points, collecting collateral stories, or using whatever means necessary to finagle together appropriate language translation for the deaf-mute-Swahili patient…

New in @NEJM.
“Black residents training face ⬆️ rates of both remedial interventions & dismissal from their programs than do their White counterparts. This disproportionality raises concern that Black trainees are being overpoliced in medical education.”

We know that Latinos and Latinas are severely underrepresented in medicine. We know that the assisting staff in clinics/hospitals are mostly Latino (they are many times speaking the language) however the physicians are not. That’s why we have created this movement. We don’t need articles to know because it’s our lived experience. Please join the NLPD movement! Links to NPR story and articles below.
