@Papa_Ostler I have no problem with someone encouraging other members of their faith to try to stay in the faith. But telling them they should stay “even if [they] see no light at the end of the tunnel”? Why not go somewhere else where they do see light, and not just at the end of the tunnel?
@Ch_JesusChrist Playing🇨🇭in a scenario where one side is clearly evil and the aggressor. No moral clarity provided here by LDS Church leaders (who claim to “always speak the truth” no matter how unpopular). I guess they only share their unpopular opinions if it’s anti-LGBTQ+.
@JimmyFlinders89@Papa_Ostler I'm an ex-Mormon. But I don't think that believing Mormons have to decide between the false binary of blindly following everything Mormon leaders say or rejecting the prophet all together. Agency is a fundamental principal in Mormonism, don't give up your agency to the prophet.
@JimmyFlinders89@Papa_Ostler I invite you to read what Orson Pratt had to say about Brigham Young's treatment of those of African descent as the prophet. I also invite you to read about Lowry Nelson, an excellent example of a believing Mormon who spoke up against something he saw as wrong. George Romney also
@JimmyFlinders89@Papa_Ostler 150 years of institutional racism disagrees with you. You can believe they are inspired, you cannot (accurately) believe they are infallible, even when it comes to revelation and guidance for the church as a whole.
@JimmyFlinders89@Papa_Ostler They are not infallible. And we know they can make big mistakes that lead to people’s suffering. This is a fact of history. So when they do make those mistakes, we should speak up & do what we can to limit the suffering they cause. This is what I believe is taught in Matthew 25.
@ColbyTownsend16@TaylorPetrey Yes, I would say this changes the calculus here. He's a billionaire who has pledged to give away 90% of his wealth before or at his death. Although I do agree that someone being a billionaire doesn't make them a moral authority on anything, and probably goes against them.
@Papa_Ostler Support the victim and continue to sustain the abuser? Doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. I understand you self-censor so you don’t get flagged as an apostate or fringy, but at some point the correct answer is to speak out. Is there no line?
@metteharrison I’ve always been uncomfortable with the narrative that “you’ll be so much happier if/when you leave.” It seems like the exact naive thing I believed as a Mormon, that literally everyone would be happier if they were Mormon.
@katwils0n Email him back and say something along the lines of “No, you will not ask my husband’s permission. I am requesting my records please be removed immediately, with no waiting periods. My husband’s opinion on the matter has nothing to do with what I requested of you.”
@Papa_Ostler Curious if any of these stories include LGBTQ Latter-Day Saints that have chosen to "act on it" and date/marry someone of the same gender, or only of those who have chosen celibacy or a mixed-orientation marriage? Honest question, as I know you have both stories on your podcast.
@Papa_Ostler You seem like a really nice guy, but that's going to be a hard pass. I would never align myself with an organization that is hostile to the LGBTQ community, and is unapologetic about their intense institutional racism. Those are just two of the many deal-breakers.
@Papa_Ostler I appreciate the role you play as a listening ear to those in pain, but how HOW can you support a document like The Family Proclamation? ESPECIALLY because of the pain you've seen it has caused those that don't fit in the tiny little box that it demands everyone fit in.
