It’s a skit, and it’s barely an exaggeration. In this dark comedy filmed by young Palestinians in Gaza, an Israeli officer phones a man and orders him up to the roof so he can be bombed. His friend grabs the phone and tells the officer to bomb them all, because after three years of chasing charity kitchens and water, and being preyed on by profiteers, this isn’t living anyway. Palestinians in Gaza laugh because they know the call is real. The Israeli occupation army phones people to tell them their building is about to be destroyed, then often bombs it minutes later, before families can get out.

That’s what happened in Al-Sabra in Gaza City this month, where a mother and a child were killed and others were left wounded inside. The calls aren’t mercy. They’re one more way to terrorise people. Since the ceasefire, Israeli drones have repeatedly struck people on rooftops. Earlier this month in Jabalia camp, a drone killed a young man on the roof of his family’s home. Accounts shared widely online say an Israeli officer called him first and threatened to wipe out his entire family unless he climbed up to the roof alone, so they could kill him there. He went up to save them, and they killed him. When reality is this cruel, dark humour becomes one of the few ways Gaza has left to say it out loud.
