While the deficit is driven by imports growth by 73%, this also reflects the government's decision not to publish data on export of gold anymore, the key item since 1997. #kyrgyzstan's export of gold was 1.6bln$ in 2021, but only 13mln$ in 2022.

A lack of welfare effects is likely related to the functioning of export value chains, which are driven by intermediaries, who have incentives to equalize farm-gate prices, regardless of whether the products are destined for export or domestic markets. 3/4

@ADoolotkeldieva I find the topics of clans/tribes in CA interesting & relevant. A bright example of a research on this topic is Guirkinger et al: https://t.co/Wi2g1NwUPv. They get archival clan data from 1910, match with @LiK_Study data from 2012, & find that econ.inequality btw clans remained.

#kyrgyzstan's growth is robust at 7% in 2022 per NSC, returning it to pre-COVID levels. Inflation was high at almost 15%, and import of goods is likely to reach a record high level, pushing the current account deficit to over a quarter of GDP (per IMF).
