🚨MASSIVE: 6.7 Lakh Tonnes of Rare Earth Elements Discovered in Bengal: A Strategic Blow to China’s Mineral Monopoly

In West Bengal’s Purulia district, the Geological Survey of India has identified an estimated 6.7 lakh tonnes of rare-earth resources at the Kalapathar and Raghudih deposits and has begun further exploration to assess their grade, extent and economic viability.

This is significant because rare earths are essential for electric vehicles, permanent magnets, electronics, aerospace, renewable energy and advanced defence systems.

But the real story is not simply the size of the discovery.

It is about China’s dominance over the supply chain.

China accounts for a major share of global rare-earth mining and an even larger share of processing. This means countries can possess rare-earth deposits while still depending on China to process them into usable materials and manufacture high-value products such as permanent magnets.

India is now trying to break that dependence.

The challenge is that discovering minerals does not automatically create mineral security. India's deposits can be difficult to exploit because of low grades, complex mineralogy, processing limitations and regulatory and environmental challenges. Monazite, one of India's important rare-earth-bearing minerals, also contains thorium, adding another layer of complexity.

That is why the next phase of exploration in Purulia is crucial.

India is simultaneously building the rest of the ecosystem through the National Critical Mineral Mission and a ₹7,280-crore programme to establish 6,000 tonnes per year of integrated rare-earth permanent-magnet manufacturing capacity.

The objective is clear:

Mine in India. Process in India. Refine in India. Manufacture in India.

India steps up security across the Jammu region as Pakistan enters a period of acute internal and external pressure.

The attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan are exacting a growing military cost. Islamabad is simultaneously bracing for PTI protests, opposition mobilisation over inflation and fuel prices, and the arrival of protesters from Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Containers are going up across the capital even as the government tries to keep the streets under control.

Then there is the external picture. The diplomatic dividends Islamabad appeared to expect from its sudden prominence around the US-Iran crisis have also not materialised. The Houthis have issued a direct warning. Afghanistan has been struck. And Pakistan’s much-vaunted return to the regional diplomatic centre of gravity is looking considerably less convincing.

This is precisely when New Delhi has reason to watch the western frontier closely. A Pakistan facing heat on several fronts has more incentives to look for strategic space, not fewer.

Afghanistan, too, needs to watch closely.
