@EKAttachmenta @Miracle_Island There are lots of opportunities for both locals and foreign especially in top-ranking institutes. However, I have seen labs getting shut down due to lack of productivity whether its foreign or local. SL has a very different system and culture which cannot be compared.

@EKAttachmenta @Miracle_Island Any form of nepotism is bad, and SL is exceptionally bad, I have worked in all three countries. No one I see here or in Aus feels obligated to go to uni to help it rise through ranks. Decision is based on what's best for them. The only reason to go to work or uni.

@EKAttachmenta @Miracle_Island Forcing or exploiting individuals into creating new knowledge never works. Again, going to workforce is a very good thing. I used to work in a SL state uni where nepotism is rampant hence low standards. Only hope institutes elsewhere won't become like ours.

@EKAttachmenta @Miracle_Island So? Nothing wrong with not wanting to do PhDs or an academic career. Going to work force early and making money is equally good. In Australia many industries such as hospitality, construction, adult/childcare also have many overseas workers.

@EKAttachmenta @Miracle_Island Absolutely wrong! I am a scientist in US (previously in Australia). It's a myth that foreign researchers contribute more than locals. People from all over the world come to these countries for opportunities built upon robust education systems supported by progressive individuals

@Miracle_Island @EKAttachmenta Also, society acts as if economic prosperity and social acceptance can only be achieved via university education. Hence teachers/parents very comfortable with ridiculing any educational/career pursuit outside universities. Kids are exploited to believe in this lie.

@Miracle_Island @EKAttachmenta Yes, parents and the whole society. Finland is a way better country than Australia for South Asian kids because private tuition is illegal there. Kids will be most importantly sane, and way better educated than those going to tuition.

SL education system serve as a meat grinder forcefully trying to convert children into scholars instead of helping them discover their strengths, inclinations and achieve independence.

It is false that foreign researchers are the only reason behind the rankings in US. They prefer such places due to their excellent track record and career growth.

@ItsYakin Even if teaching is done properly in schools, students still seek tuition due to the fear of failing exams. Tuition industry exploits this exam-oriented education system where it's all about the letter grade, not the education.

@ManikkageYasuni The problem is related to cultural values not soft skills. I see some foreign academics in West exerting unnecessary authority over students from their background but never to locals. Training programs are not designed to alter cultural values. Changing it is a personal choice.

@ManikkageYasuni True. In Western countries individuals are empowered enough to not to give excessive admiration and respect to anyone. In Sri Lanka, the environment is ripe for exploitation. Also, foreign training doesn't seem to affect the value systems, only the subject matter.
