Nature has made contributions to the field of anesthesia. Throughout history various plants have been instrumental in shaping anesthetics, such as cocaine from coca leaves and thymol and eugenol found in thyme and cloves.

A recent research paper investigates the range of phytochemicals with properties. These unique compounds derived from plants have structures that hold promise for developing new anesthetics and related drugs.

Terpenoids, alkaloids and flavonoids have emerged as components frequently recognized for their anesthetic effects, general anesthesia properties, pain relieving abilities, analgesic qualities and sedative effects using these phytochemicals in both anesthesia procedures and general anesthesia by drawing insights from animal experiments conducted in vivo well as pre clinical trials involving human subjects.

If natural sources have yielded anesthetics, why hasn't Ayurveda, with its focus on natural remedies, incorporated anesthesia for surgeries, potentially reducing dependence on modern medicine ?
