@nixcraft Casio is correct. You haven’t eliminated the P in PEMDAS (I do not subscribe to newcomers) until the multiplication is done so it’s not about division versus multiplication but eliminating the parens first-and-foremost to completion before doing any other operation in my mind

Avoid creating a sub-shell and forming an instance of cat with its stdout mapped to the sub-shells stdin for the purpose of collecting the output.

Just open a new file-descriptor that takes its input as a here-doc. No calls to spawn/exec etc
