The premise of your argument is flawed because it creates a false binary between “Tamil identity” and “Dravidian ideology,” when in reality modern Tamil identity in public life has been significantly shaped, preserved, and politically asserted through the Dravidian movement.

First of all, the claim that Tamil history is ignored is simply not accurate. The legacies of the Chola Empire, Chera and Pandiya dynasty are deeply embedded in Tamil Nadu’s cultural consciousness through textbooks, temple preservation, archaeology, tourism circuits, and public discourse.

Not every aspect of history needs a state holiday to be respected…recognition can exist in more substantive institutional ways.

Secondly regarding V. O. C, he is not neglected. Ports, statues, memorials, and educational references ensure his legacy is remembered.

The question should be about expanding historical engagement across the board not selectively claiming erasure.

Thirdly reducing Tamil Nadu’s modern political history to “just 70 years” misses a critical point…the Dravidian movement emerged as a response to caste inequality, linguistic imposition, and social exclusion.

Leaders like Anna and Kalaignar didn’t erase Tamil identity… infact they democratized it. They took what was historically elite controlled cultural capital and made Tamil language and pride accessible to all sections of society.

Now, on “What is Dravidian ideology?”

It is not a single-point definition:

It is a social justice framework (reservation, anti-caste hierarchy)
It is linguistic assertion (protecting Tamil against homogenization)
It is a federal political stance (state autonomy within India)
It is also a historical reform movement rooted in self-respect politics

It is not merely an “anti-Hindi” stance or a “vote bank tool,” though opponents often simplify it that way for their vested political interests.

As for why other states don’t use the term “Dravidian” politically… that’s simply because political histories differ !

Tamil Nadu had a uniquely strong, organized social justice movement that translated into electoral power. That doesn’t invalidate the ideology..it only reflects regional political evolution.

Finally, the suggestion that Tamil identity is being “diluted” is ironic because it is precisely Dravidian politics that institutionalized Tamil in governance, education, and public life, resisting linguistic domination at multiple points in history.

Tamil identity and Dravidian ideology are not adversaries.

One is civilizational and cultural while the other is political and social.

In Tamil Nadu, they have evolved together …not in opposition and that is exactly why they are inseparable 🤷‍♀️
