A woman in Tacloban City hands her phone to a cashier. The Paytaca point-of-sale registers the payment in seconds. The transaction cost her a fraction of a cent. This is not a pilot program — it's one of 78 businesses in that single city accepting Bitcoin Cash today.
The mechanism that makes this possible is worth being precise about, because it isn't magic and it isn't luck. It's the direct output of two architectural decisions made at the August 2017 fork, compounding over eight years of consistent development.
Decision one: block size.
BCH blocks are capped at 32MB as a floor — the ABLA algorithm activated in May 2024 can push that ceiling higher automatically based on observed demand. The current average block is roughly 40 kilobytes. Out of 32 megabytes. The fee auction that defines BTC's fee environment — where users bid against each other for constrained blockspace, and miners take the highest-paying transactions first — never starts on BCH because the supply side has room. The median BCH transaction fee right now is $0.00077. The average is under half a cent. These numbers aren't a temporary artifact of low usage. They're the structural output of a chain where blockspace supply exceeds demand by a wide margin, and where the supply side is designed to grow automatically if demand ever catches up.
BTC blocks run near 99.8% capacity as a design condition. That's not a bug — it's the intended outcome of a deliberate choice to keep blocks small. The consequence is that when demand spikes, fees spike with it. BTC's median fee right now is $0.034. On a quiet day. During congestion it has hit $30, $50, more. For a $5 purchase at a Tacloban convenience store, a $0.034 fee is 0.68% of the transaction value on a good day and potentially 100%+ on a bad one. The economics don't work for retail. BCH's $0.00077 median fee is 0.015% of the same transaction. The economics work.
Decision two: Replace-By-Fee removal.
BTC kept opt-in RBF when BCH forked away from it in August 2017. This is the less-discussed decision but arguably the more consequential one for merchant adoption. RBF allows a sender to replace an unconfirmed transaction with a new version — typically one that redirects the funds or pays a higher fee to jump the queue. On BTC, a merchant accepting an unconfirmed transaction is accepting real double-spend risk. The standard advice is to wait for at least one block confirmation before treating a payment as final. That's roughly 10 minutes on average, longer during congestion. For a cashier with a line of customers, that's not a checkout flow. That's a waiting room.
BCH removed RBF. A BCH transaction that hits the mempool cannot be replaced by the sender. The first broadcast is binding for practical purposes. Double Spend Proofs — DSproofs — propagate alerts across the network nearly instantly if a double-spend is attempted, giving merchants an additional layer of protection. The result is 0-conf: effective payment finality in 2-5 seconds, without waiting for a block. The Paytaca point-of-sale in Tacloban registers the payment. The cashier sees confirmation. The customer walks out. No waiting room.
These two decisions — adequate blockspace and no RBF — are why BCH Argentina has documented 400+ accepting businesses nationally. K24, a convenience store chain, accepts $BCH at 30 of its 85 locations. That's not a press release. That's 30 stores open today, processing transactions from real customers buying real things, at $0.00077 per transaction in network fees.
The Philippines context adds another dimension. The country receives approximately $40 billion in remittances annually. Traditional remittance services charge 6-9% on average — on a $200 transfer, that's $12-18 extracted before the recipient sees anything, plus processing delays, plus in some cases a physical pickup requirement. A BCH transaction to the same recipient costs $0.00077. It settles in under 10 minutes. The recipient's Paytaca wallet receives it directly. No bank account required on either end. No approval process. No exchange rate controlled by a third party. The 78 merchants in Tacloban exist in part because BCH is already the remittance rail for a meaningful number of local residents — and a currency that arrives in your wallet is a currency you can spend locally if local merchants accept it.
The architecture behind all of this hasn't been static. CashTokens shipped in May 2023 — native fungible tokens and NFTs at the consensus layer, not a smart contract abstraction. AnyHedge lets BCH holders lock in fiat-equivalent value non-custodially. The Layla upgrade activated in May 2026, adding bounded loops, function definitions, and bitwise opcodes to the BCH VM. ParyonUSD launched April 30, 2026 as BCH's first native decentralized stablecoin. The chain keeps building. The fee doesn't move.
Back to Tacloban. The woman hands her phone to the cashier. The transaction settles. It cost less than a tenth of a cent. Same SHA-256 proof-of-work as BTC. Same 21 million coin supply cap. Same 10-minute target block time. One chain made the blockspace decision and removed RBF. The other didn't. The 78 pins on the Tacloban merchant map are the direct, measurable output of that difference.
