Good article on the merits of landfills over recycling.

The most important thing is to collect the waste and prevent it from flowing into the environment; whether you then put it in a sanitary landfill vs incinerate it in a controlled environment vs recycle it doesn’t really matter all that much.

I think recycling still makes sense for high-grade plastics (e.g. PET), but just doesn’t add up for lower-grade plastics.

And yes, for most countries on Earth, landfills are a significant step up from what happens with a lot of their waste today (open dumping, uncontrolled burning and leakage into the ocean). Emphasis on recycling here is a big distraction.

One of the most infuriating pieces of criticism The Ocean Cleanup receives is that, where we put our catch in landfills, we don’t actually solve any problem because “we’re just moving the plastic from one place to another.” Sure, a plastic bag smothering a coral reef is just as harmful as one safely stored underground 🙄
