A nonprofit institution whose endowment fund earned 16% per year from June 1994 to June 1999, but since its peers averaged 23%, the people involved with the endowment were dejected.

Without growth stocks, technology stocks, buyouts and venture capital, the endowment was entirely out of step for half a decade. But then the tech stocks collapsed, and from June 2000 to June 2003, the institution earned 3% per year, while most endowments suffered losses. The stakeholders were thrilled.

How can people be unhappy making 16% per year and happy making 3%?

The answer lies in the tendency to compare ourselves with others and the deleterious impact this can have on what should be a constructive, analytical process.

In today's Nigerian 🇳🇬 economy 💰, it comes off as insensitive and disconnected from reality 🤔 if you ask people to save from a 100k or 150k salary 💸.
I get that it's a good habit to save 💰, but the right advice for someone who earns that low 😩 is to offer ways to increase that income 📈, not to sell the idea of saving from an income that is barely enough to survive 🤔.
