Biggest problem w the odyssey is that the movie doesn’t tell the viewer wtf Zeus’s law is supposed to be. Characters say it many times but by the end of the movie you still have no clue what it’s all about lol

The worst part of The Odyssey isn't the bad costumes or the woke casting.

It's honestly the writing.

Christopher Nolan is a talented director, but as a screenwriter, he fails to grasp an important concept:

Show, don't tell.

The dialogue in the film is basically an unending rehashing of these lines:

Penelope: I want Odysseus! These suitors are annoying!

Telemachus: Where's my dad? He's coming back!

Instead of these characters just repeating these concepts again and again, the film would have been MUCH more interesting if Christopher Nolan actually SHOWED what they were feeling and going through, instead of just having them tell us.

For example, why not show us Penelope struggling to actually rule Ithaca without Odysseus? All we ever see her do is weave. She could be trying to settle disputes between citizens, manage household logistics, Ithaca's failing economy, but failing to keep up.

"Ruling didn't seem so impossible when Odysseus did it" Penelope could say as she buries her head in her hands, surrounded by a pile of scrolls.

Much more engaging for audiences to see than just hearing "Ithaca doesn't have a king! I want Odysseus back!"

This would also ironically let Penelope girlboss more than she does in the actual film. There's a throwaway line in the movie where Penelope laments the fact that no one recognizes her for ruling in Odysseus's stead, but the audience never sees her do anything but sulk and weave.

Also, the "suitors" barely engage with Penelope at all. If we weren't told they were suitors, we wouldn't know it as the audience. There's only one scene where a suitor (Antinous/Robert Pattinson) tries to get Penelope to marry him.

Why not have some of the wealthy suitors actually try to convince Penelope their wealth could solve Ithaca's problems (and hers)?

This would 1) Show, not tell, the audience that these are SUITORS trying to win her hand, not randos just drinking their wine, and 2) make Penelope's commitment to waiting for Odysseus more admirable.

It's easy for a wife to reject drunk assholes. It would speak more to Penelope's loyalty if the men she were rejecting could actually potentially help Ithaca's and her own struggles.

If you just want to see a big screen epic, The Odyssey does have some beautiful cinematography. And some cool scenes involving the Cyclops and the fall of Troy. I also appreciate how Nolan films on location instead of in front of giant green screens.

But if you care about things like, I don't know, a good script, I'd say avoid this movie.
