17.6 refers to a geographic region, and is clearly hyperbole. If we want to take 17.30 as something less than everyone in history, it seems the only real choice we have is to take it as the same kind of hyperbole referring to the same geographic region.
I don't see any way to get to "all kinds of people."
My ex made me sleep in the guest bedroom for three days after each trip. At the time, I was traveling for work about 20'ish times per year ... taking red eyes, etc., so I could minimize my "hotel nights." I don't travel that much any more ... thankfully.
Anyway, one of the various reasons she is now my ex.
@BethanyMcGrew@tomascol Why should they ask the /women/, specifically? They shouldn't ask the men? Or the elders? Or the children?
Nope, just the women ... because clearly women are more spiritual and wiser, right?
How absurd.
@Bushra1Shaikh@JonCommonSense So everyone would get along if everyone just hated whites and Jews? I think you fail to understand the human condition, history, or even yourself.
When they say they are "just as you might ask a friend," they show they don't understand Catholic dogma.
They are asking because she supposedly has a "treasury of grace" from which she can "bless you." This "treasury" comes from the pain of watching her Son die on the cross.
It's false doctrine all the way down.
@annielcrawford Or fall to the temptation to use the ring "for good." Replace the ring with government and tech ... and that's the decision far too many are already making.
@Jondaphemp@DPGBehler Yes. Another way to say this is valuing dignity over profit ... Judaism and Christianity teach us that himans are not "economic units."
Our culture celebrates Potter, sadly, but expects George Bailey.
@DPGBehler BTW, another point ... we've learned far too much about how to make addictive things across the board. The amount of self-control it takes to refuse addiction in today's world is (intentionally) much higher than it was in my parent's generation.
We need to return to a world where food companies put quality first instead of profit.
But ... this isn't just food companies. This is about banks, and "social media," and churches, and governments, and every other organization in the modern world set up to maximize revenue while minimizing costs.
Money != dignity.
Flip side of the coin.
We also need to return to a world where people care about their health and take responsibility for their decisions.
One instance--"x or y health thing really isn't important, I do this all the time and it doesn't effect me." That's something I used to say when I was 20'ish. I'm over 60 now, I've been through one heart failure (afib, not blockage), and I've learned that things people consider stupid like sugar intake, seed oils, and artificial sweeteners actually matter to the way I feel and function.
