@tangotiger i wonder if scheduling changes aided this... played 20+ fewer games vs light-hitting division rivals this year. similar for Reds/NL Central and GABP
@markasaxon@mike_petriello although sarcastic, i read an indirect criticism specifically of John smoltz, a primary in-home spokesperson and salesperson for MLB. seems to work hard to AVOID admitting that players and managers make decisions in game using goo-gobs of data, along with gut/feeling/tradition.
@tangotiger some splits likely indicate random variation at play, but this particular one could very well indicate something mechanical (within Strider's control) when pitching from stretch vs windup
@tangotiger@JasonBernard_ That's fair. without knowing your goals though, strikes me as odd that a lg leading pitcher in WAR (Wheeler) is closer to an average score than leading score-unsure on what it says.
@tangotiger This is great, thank you. I would love to see this chart with each point colored for wOBA over the time frame... I wonder how common it is to end up with successful outcomes despite lacking patience.
@tangotiger players don't much control what position they play. player A starts at 3B for team 1, but gets pushed to 2B on team 2 because of a slightly better fielder there, or stuck in corner OF for team 3. his WAR changes significantly based on team decisions/needs, not his play/skill.
@league_mlb@AdamMoehring thank you for running it! great idea, nice to have an extra reason to follow a different team each week. thanks to all for playing π
@AndrewSimonMLB@Stathead I thought this was great so I went and ran it too, looks like your results got limited to 100 rows and then you sorted by date. if you ask the full results to return descending by date, there are way more players that meet the criteria. still an impressive list!
@tangotiger and with more years of data, is there "rhyme or reason" to MLB-wide shifting of pitch selections from year to year? e.g., is a year heavy on sliders often followed by a year heavy on two seamers...
(2/2)
@TracyBethHoeg as a data analyst I wonder the same lately. I suspect trouble lies in charts that still use total pop to scale the y-axis. surges are now viewed on a scale of the effect on unvaccinated pop only. love to regenerate these charts with per capita cases in unvaxxed pop this spring
@tangotiger@_dadler Awesome explanation, thank you!
Q: on the fielder's side, are the calculations of the time needed for the throw and the exchange based on Ahmed's individual data, or the time needed by an average MLB fielder? does a stronger arm = higher catch probability % and lower OAA ?
Mike Piazza bought an Italian soccer team. Then everything went wrong.
@robertandrewp spent 10 days in Reggio Emilia and five hours with the Piazzas to bring you the story.

Major reason why the #Cardinals have found themselves in the precarious spot of being the middle -- on the fence between tank and titan -- is the draft. For @baseballpro and @stltoday I researched avg draft spot throughout #MLB. This is NL Central:
