A sitting MLA is unable to read her own oath clearly. It’s ironic that in a country where even a peon is required to have a matriculation certificate for a govt job, our MPs and MLAs face no mandatory educational qualification whatsoever.

One could argue that this flexibility made sense in the years immediately after independence, when large sections of the population had limited access to education. Deepawali is not, at its core, a festival of lights, décor, kindness, positivity, harmony, or vague ideas like “light over darkness” and “good over evil.”

The festival exists for a very specific reason: to celebrate the return of Prabhu Ram and Mata Sita to Ayodhya after vanvaas, or, in some parts of South India, Prabhu Krishna's killing of Narakasura. That is the origin, the intent, and the historical and cultural anchor of Deepawali. This is how it should be taught, how it should be wished, and how it should be remembered.

The poetic descriptions in the first paragraph may be values derived from the Ramayana, but they are not the reason Deepawali is celebrated. The festival is fundamentally rooted in Shri Ram and the Ramayana.

Unfortunately, that core is barely reflected in the way most people talk about or greet each other on Deepawali today. Please include the core in your Deepawali greetings.
