An absolutely cynical and despicable strike was carried out by the Russians against an ordinary shopping center in Kryvyi Rih. The attack drones struck in two waves – half an hour after the first hit and the fire, there was a second strike targeting the emergency responders. As of now, five deaths have been reported. My condolences to the families and loved ones of those killed. At least 52 people have been injured, including six children. All those injured are receiving the necessary medical care. Attacks like these are nothing less than terrorist acts. And the world must respond to them accordingly – with real pressure on the aggressor. For peace to be possible, Russia must face real accountability.

For several years in Poland, one of the loudest talking points was the supposed "Ukrainian ban on exhuming Polish victims." The story was usually told as a question of dignified Christian burial – and as proof of the "barbarism" of Ukrainians who were standing in its way, and who therefore had no place in the European family of nations.

I never got tired of pointing out that no such ban ever existed. What existed was a temporary moratorium on search work, and it came in response to Poland's refusal to restore even one of the fifteen vandalized Ukrainian monuments standing over real graves. Not graves that still had to be found, but ones that were already known, looked after, and then destroyed between 2014 and 2018.

Not one of them has been restored to its original state, even though Poland's most senior officials promised to do so again and again. President Duda went so far as to publicly announce that the monument on Mount Monastyr would be rebuilt after he reached an understanding with Zelensky. It never happened. That was not the first broken promise in this story, and it does not look like the last.

Even so, Ukraine took another step to cool things down and lifted the moratorium on search work. The search for mass burial sites began. But it has not turned up what certain Polish politicians were clearly hoping for – dramatic finds with thousands, or even hundreds, of remains.

And this is exactly where the distinction I kept insisting on starts to matter: Ukraine never banned reburials. The temporary limit applied only to new search work. Now that it has been lifted, we can see that the talk of thousands of Polish victims still waiting in Ukrainian soil for a proper burial was political propaganda. And the point of that propaganda was never really to honor the Polish dead. It was to paint Ukrainians as villains and stir up hostility toward them.

“Poles should be more careful about what they say regarding Ukraine and its history.” (Norman Davies)

I highly recommend reading Norman Davies’ latest interview.

Davies is not only one of the world’s foremost historians of Poland, but also the author of the monumental God’s Playground: A History of Poland. At a time when emotions are running high, he offers something that has become increasingly rare: historical nuance.

A few points that stood out to me:

“We should say this plainly: overall, the UPA was not a criminal organization.”

Davies does not deny the crimes committed in Volhynia. In fact, he says he has “no doubt” they fall within the spectrum of genocide. But he also insists on distinguishing between the crimes of specific factions and an entire national liberation movement.

He also warns that the current political escalation is a strategic mistake:

“This affair will cost Poland in the future… At precisely the moment when Ukraine is in its fifth year of war with Russia, the Polish president handed Russia a very useful pretext for propaganda.”

On President Zelenskyy’s decision to honor the “Heroes of the UPA,” Davies rejects the claim that this was about glorifying the Volhynia massacres:

“What the President of Ukraine did has nothing to do with Volhynia. Ninety percent of the UPA had nothing to do with Volhynia. Was President Zelenskyy supposed to refuse to honor ninety percent of the heroes of the UPA?”

Finally, Davies calls for perspective rather than political grandstanding:

“I believe Poles should be more careful about what they say regarding Ukraine and its history.”

Like a story with MIGs, they are still i. Poland if you can imagine. Ukraine already received over 100 F-16’s since. And guess what, they propose MIG’s in exchange for Ukrainian drone tech. This tells you that there is no care in the world for US soldiers on frontline. Only money
