the feature itself is great for privacy. you shouldn't have to hand out your phone number just to chat with someone. but it's also something users on telegram have had for years.
the reality is, in india, it's almost impossible to stay off of whatsapp.
need to print a pdf? shopkeeper says send it on whatsapp.
oh you got a new job? your work group is on whatsapp.
get into a college or university? your teachers will probably run the entire class through whatsapp.
probably that's why whatsapp can afford to move slowly. it's not because the feature is revolutionary. it's because the network effect is. people don't use whatsapp because it's the best messenger anymore. they use it because everyone else already does.
