Effects of manakin gut passage on germination of a neotropical melastome shrub (Melastomataceae) - Rompf - Biotropica - Wiley Online Library https://t.co/hmX7QC6XKb
New paper out in Biotropica, led by Katie Rompf! https://t.co/Zfr10sACxl
Manakin gut passage speeds germination (but doesn't improve overall germination success) of a neotropical fruiting shrub. Heavier manakins had greater effects on the timing/success of seed germination!
🚨 NEW PAPER ALERT! 🚨
Ever since the OG, Darwin, evolutionary biologists have been puzzled by the potential benefits females get by choosing "attractive" males. Well, good news Chuck, my grad school buddy Doug Barron and I figured it out today in @ASNAmNat! 😜 🧵 1/8

You've probably heard about the amazing displays of lek-mating birds. But what happens away from the lek? And is important for understanding sexual selection processes?
Check out our open access paper in Ornithology!

And I would be remiss if I didn't include this throwback photo of my advisor @jkphenomenon doing fieldwork in NW Ecuador.
Umbrellabird photos in this thread were taken by the inimitable Murray Cooper.
Enjoy the paper!
This paper features 16 years of hard-won behavioral data collected by coauthor Jorge Olivo, a local community member affiliated with @FCAT_Ecuador. Jorge has been radio-tracking LWUMs and other birds since 2003 (and taught me telemetry at the start of my PhD!).
