In 1976, Nigerian journalist Sam Ogun confessed to DRUM that he had spent nearly 10 years spying on Nigeria for the CIA. He also warned that many other Nigerians were being recruited to infiltrate different sectors of the country.

He told the magazine, "The CIA has so many arms or branches — trade union organisations, educational institutions, cultural organisations. The CIA is the father and through these organisations which are sent to Africa to help developing countries. The agents or officers of these organisations use their organisations as covers to spy for the CIA."

Ogun said Nigerians could be recruited without knowing it, benefiting directly or indirectly from development programmes run by organisations he claimed were linked to foreign intelligence networks.

"You don't apply to be an agent or spy. You are spotted, trailed, and an assessment is made of you without your knowing," he said.

His own career as a spy began in the early 1960s, when he worked as an "information officer" for the American Motion Picture Export Company. An American film distributor known as Jack paid him to write reviews of foreign films for local newspapers, which were then forwarded to New York. Ogun said that was how he was first placed on a payroll.

He later confessed to spying on foreign diplomats, trade unionists, civil servants, students and fellow journalists. He said he was trained to use a camera and a pocket-sized tape recorder designed for espionage.

Ogun eventually retired from spying and explained his decision to confess: "I found out by myself the evil the CIA had been doing to Africa."

NO NKRUMAH DISRESPECT WILL BE TOLERATED ON THIS TIMELINE.

To claim that Nkrumah’s “blunders” are the reason Ghana is suffering today, and then suggest that he should have avoided the independence struggle and simply allowed the West to continue administering us, only reinforces something painful about our history:

Sometimes, the Black man has been his own enemy. Nkrumah did not have colonialism and foreign interests alone to contend with. He also had to fight people of his own creed and skin, political opponents and members of the capitalist elite who could not see beyond their immediate interests. As long as their bellies were full, they had little concern for the larger struggle for genuine economic independence.

And because they could not defeat his vision intellectually, all sorts of propaganda were circulated against him and his government. They attacked his ambitious infrastructure and industrialisation programme.

The Tema Motorway was criticised as an unnecessary waste of resources. The Akosombo project was attacked over its enormous cost. Yet decades later, THE TEMA MOTORWAY IS STILL SERVING GHANA, AND AKOSOMBO REMAINS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PIECES OF ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE THIS COUNTRY HAS EVER BUILT.

Nkrumah understood something many of his contemporaries couldn’t comprehend: POLITICAL INDEPENDENCE WITHOUT ECONOMIC INDEPENDENCE IS INCOMPLETE.

He wanted factories. He wanted energy. He wanted infrastructure. He wanted African-controlled industries. He wanted Ghana to process its own resources rather than remain a colonial-style economy exporting raw materials and importing finished products.

Was Nkrumah perfect? Of course not.
His political and economic decisions are legitimate subjects for criticism.
But to blame a man who was OVERTHROWN IN 1966 for Ghana’s suffering sixty years later is intellectually lazy.

How many governments have ruled Ghana since Nkrumah? How many billions have we borrowed? How many industries have we allowed to collapse?
How many development plans have been abandoned simply because governments changed?

At what point do the generations that came AFTER Nkrumah accept responsibility? His overthrow helped truncate an ambitious industrialisation drive. Instead of building upon what worked and correcting what didn’t, Ghana gradually returned to the familiar cycle of exporting raw materials, importing finished products, borrowing heavily and running to foreign institutions whenever our economy collapses.

And today you want to tell us NKRUMAH IS THE REASON WE ARE SUFFERING? Please! One would think that with old age comes greater wisdom and the opportunity to reconsider the mistakes and prejudices of one’s youth.

But alas, LITTLE FOOLS ALSO GROW OLD. Criticize Nkrumah. Question his policies. Discuss his mistakes. Bring facts. Bring evidence. Bring history.

But disrespect Osagyefo and rewrite our history to suggest that fighting colonialism and pursuing industrialisation were somehow Ghana’s great mistakes?

NOT ON THIS TIMELINE. Nkrumah could see tomorrow while many of his critics could barely see beyond their stomachs.

NO DISRESPECT TO OSAGYEFO DR. KWAME NKRUMAH WILL BE TOLERATED HERE.

This is deeply ironic because before imperial Britain invaded the subcontinent, India was one of the two largest economies on earth, accounting for roughly 27% of global GDP. By the time the British colonial apparatus finally left, India lost 88% of its GDP and their share of global wealth had plummeted to a mere 3% due to centuries of systematic plunder.

Yet, you never see European commentators posting these statistics or framing this monumental theft as a stain on Western civilization.

The Indians celebrating their culture in London are tax-paying, working-class contributors who pose absolutely no threat to Europe. The true threat to Western civilization is the current crop of European leaders who are completely subordinate to American hegemony, willing to drag their own citizens into the meat grinder of World War 3 merely to antagonize Russia and appease their handlers in Washington.
