@fatherfigure222 It’s the antithesis of “popular” music. Many critics paint mainstream music as inferior to alternative music because their authority is contingent on the perception of their taste being more sophisticated than the public. Their views are often against what is currently “popular”
@ohnopi0 THIS. the metric we have to measure success is streaming and sales. A subjective take on a song is only that, subjective. If you have one opinion chances are 50 other people have a different opinion. quantitative data is one of the only ways we can determine a artist’s impact
@swiftism100 Also saying that right after a paragraph about how olivia DOES THE SAME EXACT THING?? People love relatability i don’t understand why it’s so wrong when taylor does that?
@somewheretolost Their job is to be critical based off of their expertise with the subject matter. Music journalism frequently lacks this kind of expertise and impartiality, leading to a review that doesn’t even discuss the music itself, only the artist’s life surrounding the music.
@dothejackal2@radicalSquaddie@MrJoeMcBob by what metric? why do you think that grammy awards should be awarded based off of stan twitter? Social media is an echo chamber, and one of the only ways we can base success of anything is through consumption. Why has commercial success become a negative only for taylor?
@grace_roso your “review” of the encore reads as disgusting personal vitriol. Whatever musical criticism is here gets buried under contempt. This review feels deeply biased and gives journalism a bad name. I am concerned for the integrity of paste and suprised this was published.
@confettifalls no like genuinely i saw this tweet and was like this lyric is the one that you are basing the fact that taylor has never wrote anything distressing? It’s a whole other world out there
@MrJoeMcBob My biggest issue is when MUSIC criticism turns into personal/lifestyle criticism. Bringing up the new work wedding or extremely biased view of taylor’s self image and marriage have no basis in an album review. At this point it is blatant slander.
@Marsspace17_ what artist doesn’t write about their personal life in some capacity? Olivia’s whole album is about her relationship she just got out of????
@mirrorball1397 if every song goes number 1 now then why isn’t every song number 1 from debuting? they make up stupid logic just because they don’t like taylor
@spennyxcx large fan base ≠ inorganic. just because for some reason you don’t agree with the performance of a song doesn’t mean that artists are manipulating streams and sales. If the demand is there, people will listen and buy. it’s simple.
@THEHORRORGOTH why do we act like having large fan bases is not cultural impact? The argument that taylor’s success somehow doesn’t matter because her fans stream her music makes no sense. I don’t really get the obsession with the gp because most acts aren’t getting these streams, “gp” or not.
@whitedmnds_ I hate the whole “an album isn’t good just because it charted” argument because how else can we define quantitative success? I personally like the new songs, but understand why some people wouldn’t which is OK, but charts exist to show trends in what people are listening to.
