Alex Mutungi Mutuku is a 37-year-old Kenyan man, a computer programmer and IT expert who became notorious as one of Kenya's most prolific cybercriminals.
Born in Machakos in 1989, Mutuku was a naturally gifted student who graduated from the University of Nairobi with a Bachelor's degree in Information Systems.
However, instead of building a legitimate tech career, he used his advanced coding skills to infiltrate some of the largest government registries and financial institutions in Kenya.
Between August 2 and 5, 2014, the 25-year-old Alex Mutungi Mutuku and his accomplices breached NCBA Bank Kenya's (then operating as NIC Bank) main core database.
According to court documents, the syndicate successfully siphoned Sh2.88 million out of the bank's internal systems.
During the intrusion, Mutuku copied deeply confidential customer databases, including account numbers, personal balances, and credential logs.
On December 18, 2014, Mutuku sent a chilling anonymous email directly to NIC Bank's executive suite. He stated that he held their entire customer directory and threatened to release the proprietary data onto public hacker forums unless the bank paid him 200 Bitcoins, which was valued at roughly Sh6.2 million at the time.
Instead of paying, the bank looped in the DCI’s Cybercrime Unit. Investigators tracked the digital extortion trail back to Mutuku and his co-accused, Stanley Kimeu Mutua. Mutuku was arrested in January 2015 and released on a Sh700,000 cash bail, only to immediately pivot to his next target.
Just weeks after getting out on bail for the NIC Bank heist, Mutuku targeted Safaricom's convergent billing and inventory systems between February and March 2015.
Rather than stealing M-Pesa cash, Mutuku breached Safaricom's backend servers to generate millions of shillings worth of free electronic airtime out of thin air. Court documents later pinned the total system damage at Sh3.69 million.
To monetize the virtual airtime quickly, Mutuku created an underground black market. He told friends, relatives, and buyers that he could supply bulk airtime at a 50% discount.
According to Safaricom's account in their court documents, Safaricom realized something was heavily wrong when their automated audit logs flagged massive discrepancies in airtime volumes. The telco aggressively used serial number tracking to map out the distribution network, which shockingly led them to block over 10,000 everyday subscribers who had purchased or received the tainted airtime.
When DCI officers tracked the code back to him at Parklands Police Station, Mutuku tried to outsmart the court. He claimed he was just an innocent app developer who stumbled on discounted airtime in the market, arguing that Safaricom was simply pinning the entire hack on him because they knew he already had an active cyber-fraud case with NIC Bank.
Between March 1, 2015, and March 1, 2017, Mutuku, together with a cross-border syndicate quietly siphoned billions from the KRA.
The syndicate colluded with rogue KRA staff members who physically brought a laptop pre-loaded with customized malware into Times Tower (KRA Headquarters in Nairobi). They connected it directly to the local network and hid it away.
The hackers used a technique called a salami attack. Instead of moving Sh4 billion in one massive transaction, their malware silently shaved off tiny, imperceptible fractions of a shilling or small tax amounts across hundreds of thousands of digital transactions over a two-year window.
The hidden network access allowed the mastermind, Mutuku, to use remote-control software from outside the building. He would log into KRA's internal servers to manipulate tax records, clearing genuine tax balances for massive corporations in exchange for huge kickbacks, or redirecting minor daily revenue splits into private syndicate accounts.
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has stated that Uhuru Kenyatta deliberately pushed him out of Nairobi politics.
According to Sonko, Uhuru orchestrated his impeachment and allegedly paid senators KSh 2 million each to remove him. The underlying reason, he claims, was his refusal to approve demolitions and evictions connected to Northlands City and other Kenyatta family interests, as well as his refusal to sign the Nairobi County budget in the absence of a proper legal framework for transferred functions.
In short, Sonko argues that he was not removed because he failed the people of Nairobi, but because he would not protect the Kenyatta family’s interests. He further claims that Mama Ngina owns about 1,000 acres in Dandora, which Uhuru wanted the county to develop using public funds.
This episode, Sonko suggests, illustrates a familiar pattern: the political battles among Kenya’s powerful families often have little to do with the welfare of ordinary citizens. When Uhuru Kenyatta criticises the current government and says Kenyans made a mistake in electing it, he is not primarily expressing concern about the hardships facing ordinary Kenyans in the streets and villages. Rather, he is expressing regret that his family no longer enjoys the privileged access to state resources and opportunities that it has benefited from since 1963. His complaint is about lost access, not about the condition of the mwananchi.
My coworker brought her toddler into the office for "bring your kid to work day," and the kid wandered into the conference room during an actual client call.
Nobody noticed for about ten seconds. Then the kid walked right up to the screen, pointed at our client's face, and said, very seriously, "that man has a mustache like my grandpa's."
Dead silence. The client, to his credit, laughed and said "he's not wrong," stroked his mustache a little, and the meeting just kind of continued from there like nothing happened.
My coworker was mortified, kept mouthing "I'm so sorry" at everyone while trying to pull her kid out by the hand, and the kid resisted the entire time, shouting "but I wasn't done talking."
We closed the deal two weeks later. In the follow-up email, the client actually asked, and I'm quoting this, "please tell the mustache kid I said hello."
My coworker brings her kid in maybe once a year now. The client always asks about him first before any actual business gets discussed.
Nobody has ever explained to the kid why a grown man he met once still remembers him by name.
JEFF KOINANGE MUST APOLOGIZE!!
I want to tell Kenyans that Jeff Koinange does not seem to value poor people around him. I don’t know whether it’s because he was born into a wealthy family, but even the way he looks at someone gives the impression that he judges people based on their appearance and social status. Even hosting someone in his Jklive show that person must be of a specific social class . So shameful so embarrassing so frustrating.
Even how he looks at someone you could tell , he cuts you to size Kama vile wale members wangu ufanya maboys .
He pushed this young man aside because he didn’t seem like a rich kid, and that was embarrassing to watch. Every person deserves respect, regardless of their financial status or background.
Young man, keep pushing! One day, Jeff Koinange might be the one looking for you to host him. Never allow anyone to make you feel small because of where you come from. Your background does not determine your future.
Acha tutafute pesa ndio tupewe heshima Kama ni hivyo wanataka !
