The year 1994 remains unforgettable in the history of Rwanda and the entire world due to the Genocide against the Tutsi, which claimed the lives of over one million people. This year marks the 32nd commemoration, as Rwanda honors and remembers the innocent victims who were killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, many of whom were targeted simply because of the way they were born.
Among those who lost their lives were talented artists whose music was widely appreciated and continues to inspire generations today.
The following are some of the Rwandan artists who were killed:
Sebanani André , A musician in Orchestre Impala and a radio actor, known for songs such as Karimi ka Shyari.
Rugamba Cyprien (Sipiriyani) , Renowned for religious and cultural music; he was killed alongside members of his family and colleagues.
Bizimana Loti , Known for humorous yet insightful songs, including Nsigaye ndi umuzungu.
Karemera Rodrigue ,A solo artist recognized for songs such as Kwibuka.
Emmanuel Sekimonyo , A popular singer, best known for Umwana w’umunyarwanda.
Bizimungu Dieudonné , Nicknamed “Nzovu y’imirindi”; he performed alongside his wife.
Uwimbabazi Agnes , A singer and the wife of Bizimungu Dieudonné, featured in songs like Munini yaje.
Gatete Sadi , A member of Orchestre Abamararungu.
Rugerinyange Eugène , A member of Orchestre Ingeli.
Murebwayire Mimir , A singer in Orchestre Les Citadins.
In addition to these, many choir members and other performers were also killed, although their stories remain less documented.
As the young people, we're grateful to the Inkotanyi who stopped the Genocide, brought Rwanda back to life, cared for the survivors, and helped our country become peaceful and develop quickly.
