Breaking News!
On July 21, 2024, the global mean surface temperature set a new modern record high of 17.09°C, beating the record of 17.07°C, set on July 6, 2023.
This record is "preliminary" for the next 24 hours. This may mark the planet's warmest day in over 100k years.
The last 12 months have seen global temperatures at 1.63°C above pre-industrial levels, according to @CopernicusECMWF.
May 2024 was the 12th consecutive month for which the global average temperature reached a record value for the corresponding month, based on ERA5 data.
It may be too much to take in all at once, but h/t to @leonsimons for pointing me to NOAA ERSST V5 SST monthly data beginning 1854, current through March, 2024.
I included the 50 year average for 1900-1949 for good measure.
This really is the beginning of the end of everything.
“What the fuck do we have to do to get through to people how bad this really is?”
Btw, my response was a warming of 3C, in line with many of my IPCC colleagues… https://t.co/pbS8PSIR61
My first day @UniMelb. I am very excited to be joining SGEAS and to be part of the Melbourne geo community again. Today was also my Dad’s last day in his current position in the same school

While there is a slight increase in Government investment in R&D from 2022-23 to 2023-24, Australia is still well below the OECD average and needs a 10-year plan to reverse the trend. Our current science system lacks strategy and coherence—and our nation’s continued under-investment in science has serious consequences for national well-being, security and prosperity.
